When Ashley was in third grade she was diagnosed with ALL ( a childhood leukemia). Three years of intense treatment and Ashley was cancer free. For the past three years Ashley has been that typical teenager involved in school, band, church youth group, and many family activities.
This week Ashley had some pain in her back. A doctor's visit turned into ultrasounds, CATScans, PETscans, biopsies of mass found in chest, draining of pleural effusion, bone marrow biopsy, and the devastating news that once again Ashley has cancer.
At this point in time, her oncologist is highly suspectant of Ewing Sarcoma.
Ashley will soon begin treatment to help her beat this cancer just as she did three years ago. Unfortunately the treatment offered to her has many side effects, but one of the most lifelong effects is the loss of ability to conceive a child naturally. Her eggs will be sacrificed by the treatment. Doctors have given Ashley the option of harvesting her eggs now, so that in years to come she may still be able to have children of her own.
You may say that why would you even have to make a decision as to whether or not to do the harvest, just do it and Ashley can make her decision down the road. The issue lies in the fact that this procedure is not covered by insurance and requires $10,000 up front. The decision needs to be made immediately as it must happen before cancer treatment can begin.
Can we all be thankful that it is not our child facing life and death decisions at the moment, let alone trying to decide if 10-15 years down the road what our family may include.
Ashley was one of my first graders 8 years ago. Once you spend six hours a day for 180 days with a six year old, they will never be forgotten. Any little bit can help Ashley reach her goal and let's pray for two Christmas gifts - a cure for Ashley now with the option to have a family later in life.
