Our beloved friend Arvin got in a terrible bike accident on Thanksgiving Day.
It's a miracle, really, that he's still with us. The doctors said they're amazed he lived. His face was essentially broken, but he's now on the long road to recovery. His jaw is wired shut and will be for up to two months or more.
Arvin is one of the heroes and stalwart friends of the cycling community here in Okinawa. He touches hearts with his kindness and warm smile wherever he goes. He reaches out with a hand of friendship to all members of the cycling community, old and young, fast and slow, new or experienced. All of us appreciate his presence and are rooting for his fast recovery from this terrible accident.
He was cycling home from a Thanksgiving morning group ride, and he got cut-off by a car. He veered off his path to avoid being hit, but he ended up slamming into the back of a non-moving truck--face first. Only his face impacted the truck. Neither his bike nor his helmet were damaged at all. He was going nearly twenty miles an hour and came to a screeching halt in an instant, with his face taking the entire impact. His face was broken in so many ways, I guess you could say it was shattered. Needless to say, he was rushed to the hospital and underwent a seven-hour surgery by a team of 4 highly experienced surgeons.
As members of the military community, but civilians, their family does have medical insurance, but they're going to have huge costs associated with the surgery and recovery process, including high co-pays and other costs. The co-pay could be over $10,000. His sweet wife is taking all the time off she can to support, but there will inevitably be medical and other costs their family needs to pay.
Arvin is a very faithful man, as is his family. He has faith in Jesus Christ and knows everything is going to be okay, but your prayers and good vibes are definitely appreciated too.
