Art Project for Victims of ISIL

Donation protected
The Knitting Circle is raising money to send artist Hannah Rose Thomas to Kurdistan to run an art programme with women and girls who have escaped form Daesh (ISIL).

In 2014, Daesh launched a genocidal campaign against the Yazidi minority in northern Iraq. They rounded up the populations of villages in Kurdistan, killing the men en masse and taking women and girls as hostages. Thousands of women and girls were passed between Daesh commanders, beaten, tortured, sexually abused and sold as slaves at markets in Iraq and Syria.

Some of them have been lucky enough to have been liberated while others managed to escape, some walking miles - terrified and alone - to find help. They now face the struggle of coming to terms with their trauma and trying to reintegrate into a conservative society that can never fully understand what they have been through. The Jinda Center in Dohuk, Kurdistan , serves as a social and psychological safe haven for these women and girls, offering them a place where they are accepted and cared for, and where they can start a new life.

Hannah Rose Thomas is an Arabic-speaking artist from London who is known for her work on projects supporting refugees in Jordan, Calais and the UK on behalf of organisations including the UNHCR, the Hummingbird Project and One Young World.

We, The Knitting Circle , are a UK-based not-for-profit group that uses art to raise awareness and build capacity and education around issues of genocide and sexual violence in conflict. Hannah will be working with us to provide an art programme for the women and girls at the Jinda Center in the summer of 2017. She will travel to Kurdistan with Clinical Psychologist Sarah Whitaker-Howe to deliver a programme focused on post-trauma therapy through art, as a way of helping victims express their ordeals and rebuild their hopes for the future.

Anything you can donate will go directly towards funding the programme for the girls. Anything leftover will go towards the amazing work that the Jinda Center does in helping Yazidi victims of Daesh rebuild their lives.
