A Room of Their Own

During 2015 and 2016, arts organisation, Multistory, and Magnum photographer, Susan Meiselas, collaborated with women who were living in a Black Country refuge. The resulting publication, A Room of Their Own, shares the women’s experiences of domestic abuse and the process of entering refuge using photographs, first hand testimonies and original artworks.
As part of 16 Days of Activism Against Gender Violence (25 November – 10 December 2017) we aim to raise the issue of domestic violence, inspire activism and raise funds to support women in refuge.

Help us to raise £2500.00 to support women and children in refuge at The Haven Wolverhampton at Christmas, by purchasing a copy of A Room of Their Own (all proceeds will be donated except P&P); or simply donate any amount that you can. If you donate £25.00 or more, you will receive a gifted copy of A Room of Their Own.
£5.00 could buy a Christmas toy for a child in refuge.
£30.00 could pay for a child to enjoy a day out of refuge at the local cinema or bowling during the school holidays.
£50.00 could pay for Christmas Dinner for a mother and her children.
£150.00 could pay for a buffet spread in refuge for a New Year Celebration.
£500.00 could cover the cost of a programme of activities in 2018, to increase the life skills of refuge residents.

A Room of Their Own is a partnership project with Multistory and Creative Black Country (as part of the Arts Council of England’s Creative People and Places Programme).
If you donate over £25.00, the book will be sent to you within a few days. However, books will not be sent after Tuesday 19 December (Royal Mail’s last day of posting for second class mail) and will be despatched from Wednesday 3 January.
Based in West Bromwich, Multistory works with outstanding artists to make art with, for and about the people of Sandwell. We invite acclaimed photographers, writers and film makers to work with communities to tell their stories. We share these stories through photographic exhibitions, books, magazines films, oral histories and archives and present them to local people at special events, We are developing a body of outstanding work called The Multistory Collection. We also nurture and support emerging artists to develop their practice.
Our projects reflect and celebrate everyday life from factories, pubs and clubs, people’s homes, places of worship and markets and many others.
We want local communities to be able to work with the best artists we can bring here because they deserve no less, and also because we want the artists to engage those communities in their creative work. Whatever we do must stand as a powerful artwork in its own right. We also believe that the best way to secure our work and its future is by producing outstanding work that people want to see, support and be involved in.
Multistory is supported by Sandwell Council and by Arts Council England.
