A Room for Lily

Donation protected
Our daughter Lily was the passenger in an auto accident on October 14th, 2016 which has left her paralyzed from the chest down. She spent 2 1/2 months recovering at Spaulding Rehabilitation Hospital in Boston after 3 weeks in Intensive Care at UVM Medical Center. Now that she is back home the reality of day to day living in our small, cramped home is setting in.

The tasks that we all take for granted are so much more challenging from a wheelchair. Preparing food, taking a shower, simply moving from room to room can be a frustrating experience. Let's face it, most homes are not wheelchair friendly and ours is no exception.

We would love to have a more appropriate space in our home so Lily may regain some of her independence and in turn her self-confidence. This is where cheerleader Brooke Cunningham and GC Buzz Ferver and Mac Rood come in. They rallied together to design a new space for Lily and a way to get the job done. We have volunteers lined up ready to start rebuilding the lower level space in our home to make it “A Room for Lily.”

We have setup this Go Fund Me page to help with raising funds for the necessary materials. The tentative completion of the project will be sometime in early October. In the meantime, there is a ton of work to be done starting with the demolition of the existing space which we will strip down to the studs and start over from scratch. The bathroom will be the biggest challenge as the space is on a concrete slab so moving the plumbing will require concrete saws and jackhammers, the new bathroom will have ample room for Lily to move around in her chair. A kitchenette will be added with lowered counters, cooktop and sink. The entire space will be designed around Lily’s needs. A wider front door will be installed and a chair lift so Lily can move between the 2 floors.

We could not be more grateful to our Mad River Valley community for getting involved in this project, without them it would never be a reality. This is just one more example of our incredible community; we are truly blessed to live here.

If we exceed our donation goal any additional funds will go directly to Lily’s therapy sessions with Project Walk in Stratham, NH.
