 OAKLAND, CA
Our Faire and Fencing friends Matthew and Karen Porter have lost everything to the devastating Clayton Fire in Lower Lake, CA.  This happened while Matthew was armoring the US Olympics Fencing Team in Rio, and Karen was able to escape with little more than their dogs.  Loss of owned home and business.

Please help out.

This is all so new that we are only just getting organized, but they need some help now to be able to get by and start rebuilding.  We will update and keep things moving.

(I am Rob Bradshaw, acting to help and solely for their benefit.  Please contact me with questions or concerns. )

T
HANK YOU ONE AND ALL!

We are closing this campaign. Thank you all so very much. Here is a final message from Matthew and Karen:

Over the top! We have started the contractor work, and should have the ability to see it through. We thank each and every one who helped and sent good thoughts, but we can never thank enough.

The world has moved on, and there are so many people who now need your help more than we do. We have been blessed to be the recipients of what we consider a miracle.

Love and Bright Blessings.

A personal statement from Matthew:

Monday August 14th marks the 1 year anniversary of the loss of our home and nearly all our goods to the Clayton Wildfire in Lake County, California. Needless to say, it has been a year like no other in our lives, and an experience that I would not wish on any one. The feeling of being up-rooted, the dis-connect from everything from your past is overwhelming, and keeping despair at bay is a constant battle.

But weigh that against thankfulness and hope. Thankfulness that Karen and I both were safe, Karen making it to an evacuation shelter with minutes to spare, and I being out of country. Thankfulness that Karen got both dogs and the cat safely out with her (although tragically the cat and one dog were killed within a few months). Thankfulness that Karen and I were re-united within a couple of days, to our mutual comfort and support.

And hope. Hope in the guise of Rob and Lee who let the world know of our plight. Hope coming from the Fencing Community, the Fair Community, and complete but good-hearted strangers who generously contributed to our rebuilding efforts. Hope obvious every day from Devon and Jennifer who immediately gave us a roof and made it clear that we were welcome as long as it takes. We are still under their roof. And hope in the form of Barbara, who shares her space with us whenever we need to be in the Bay Area. The depth of our gratitude can never be properly expressed.

So we are 1 year in. We have ordered a small manufactured home. The State of California took charge of the site cleanup as their contribution the disaster relief efforts. We have ordered a small manufactured home, and are waiting for the permit to be issued for the construction of the foundation. Unfortunately we just found out that our septic tank will need to be replaced, something for which we had not budgeted.

Two steps forward, one step back. Progress is excruciatingly slow, but it is progress. Our heartfelt thanks go out to everyone for their help and support.

This is the one year anniversary of the hardest time our dear friends Karen and Matthew Porter have ever faced. Their home and business and everything gone to fire in a terrible moment.

We have all done so very much for them, and they are so very grateful. Our friends have been putting your amazing generosity to excellent use, getting things prepared and purchasing a modest prefab home, which is on the way. They have one final hurdle, the total replacement of the septic system. Please consider giving even a little bit more to finish our frankly incredible task of helping them rebuild their entire lives. Thank you so very much!

A statement from Matthew and a full Press Release to follow. Tell all our friends! You folks are the absolute best!

Hello Matthew! I am a friend of Avis Minger, one of your Faire friends of the past. She says "hello!" and hopes you aren't discouraged by this setback. Avis is suffering from cancer, and hasn't much longer. She is not on the computer anymore, but you can visit her fundraising page for updates on her care; you can also call her -- PM me for her cell number, which she usually answers unless they've moved her phone to where she can't reach it. : https://www.youcaring.com/avis-minger-607595#goto-updates

So sorry to hear about your loss, but I'm glad I was able to contribute. I only hope I have as many friends to call upon should something similar happen to me. I'm a kitchen & cabinetry designer, so should you need anything in the future just let me know. I think my vendors would consider helping out.

We are skint right now due to surgery bills, but if you could use some Ren Faire kit, we have extra, please let us know the address to mail it. Happy memories about Rum and cokes and the birth of the pig-farker clan.
