A new classroom for Araromi

£719 of £850 goal

Raised by 57 people in 7 months
We are a group of British and Nigerian volunteers currently spending three months in Kwara, the most impoverished state in Nigeria. VSO have been working in Nigeria since 1960, and the charity implements strategies by liaising with locals and always keeping long-term impact and sustainability in mind.

The median age in Nigeria is 18, and 43% of the population are 0-14 years old, meaning that education is a highly salient issue. Alongside various other initiatives, VSO works with four schools in Kwara State; our subgroup is working with Araromi Junior Secondary School (for ages 10-15), which has the worst infrastructure out of the four. Araromi was established in 2014 - to account for the growing youth population, but also due to the genuine enthusiasm for education in this area. Pupils are talented and engaged, whilst teachers are motivated (despite many not having been paid their full wage in months) and effective at their jobs. However, an environment that can facilitate learning effectively is needed.

Currently, classes JSS1 and JSS2 share one small classroom. This means there are over 100 students in one room, with two teachers attempting to educate on entirely different topics. This is clearly not conducive to learning.

Araromi’s teachers, parents and pupils have managed to scrape together enough money to build a new classroom. However, their funds only just cover the four walls being erected. A door, windows and a roof still need to be funded, which will cost 850 GBP (any excess money raised will go towards flooring and painting).

VSO’s mission for this area broadly relates to improving education. The quality of teaching at Araromi cannot be faulted; the lack of adequate infrastructure is clearly the main obstacle to quality education. There are no toilets at this school - students have to use the bushes next to the building. Most benches and desks are broken. Classroom floors have numerous deep holes and cracks. There are many issues that, in total, are simply insurmountable for a team of six volunteers to solve in three months. But, by fundraising the money needed to finish this additional classroom, we can at least help to create an environment where students can hear the teacher and learn something.

Education is a powerful tool that can create desperately needed economic, social and political change in Nigeria. Making learning easier for the pupils at Araromi is a small step in the right direction, and we would be grateful for your support. Bear in mind that a small amount of money will go a long way when converted into Nigerian currency, so every penny helps.

Final update!

It’s done! Everything is done. Everything that we fundraised towards has been paid for and now fully fitted. The classroom that was initially roofed because of all the fundraising support we got is now fully functioning just in time for the students’ exams due to the new windows and doors! I cannot believe that this has been possible over the past few months. It just shows that over such a small span of time we have managed to create something truly amazing and useful for the students in this school. This classroom will be in use for years and years and years after that! I wish I could individually thank everyone in one message but the list would be too long. I am honestly speechless!

Thank you. Thank you. Thank you. From all the students in Araromi school, from the Principle of Araromi school and from the VSO volunteers.

Here are the last photos from the finished project!

Big update...

THE ROOF IS DONE! I waked into school today with a massive smile on my face as a new roof appeared from behind the trees. I cannot thank everyone enough for all there donations that have made this project a possibly but I’m won’t be thanking everyone yet...

Because of the massive generosity that this project has received we don’t have to stop at just getting a roof for this building. Now we can afford to put windows and doors on it too ,to FULLY seal this building making it a perfect learning environment. This will be taking place over the next few days and I will also he posting pictures of that progress!

Here is the roof!
Don’t forget, there is more to come...

Hi Everyone!

Yesterday was a big day as the first wave of donations has been withdrawn and has been handed over to the carpenter to buy the materials for the roof that evening.

The build started today early in the morning so I made my way down to the school to see how it went. They said it should be finished by the end of the day and I’m very very excited!

Here are some photos of it so far...

Hello Everyone!

I need to say a massive thank you to everyone that has been able to donate so far. The team and I have been shocked and overwhelmed with your generosity, it is outstanding! I cannot thank you enough!
Work can begin immediately.
With such an amazing donation total so far it means that next week I will begin ordering and purchasing the materials for the roof project. Added to this message are a few photos of what the incomplete classroom looks like currently, I plan to update everyone with lots of “before and after” photos as the work begins to happen. Hope you can enjoy watching the progress.
