ARACEO 2019-2020 Donation Drive

The Blue Mountain Humane Association (BMHA), in Union County, Oregon, is kicking off its 2019-2020 funding campaign. BMHA is the parent organization that oversees the Animal Rescue and Adoption Center of Eastern Oregon (ARACEO), a HIGH-SAVE Animal Rescue and Re-homing facility located at 3212 Highway 30 in La Grande, OR. We're looking to raise $20,000.00 over the coming two years to supplement basic operating costs and to support new outreach opportunities, including establishing a low-cost spay-neuter clinic on a monthly basis and a low-income spay-neuter fund. Why is ARACEO so important to animal rescue efforts in Union County?

1. ARACEO is a HIGH-SAVE facility---animals that come to us are not euthanized unless deemed by a qualified veterinarian to be irretrievably ill or behaviorally irrecoverable. Prior to becoming a high-save facility, the Animal Shelter euthanized over 1,000 animals per year. Since 2010, when the Shelter became high-save, fewer than 100 animals have been euthanized. That's not per year, that's over the entire nearly seven-year time-span. We take in animals surrendered by citizens as well as animals from local animal control, and if we cannot take your animal, we'll work hard to try to find an alternate solution. It's all about what's going to help the animal the most.

2. ARACEO works with other high-save facilities in the area, such as Spokanimal in Spokane, WA, and the Oregon Humane Association and the Pixie Project in Portland, OR, to create a network of adoption opportunities allowing animals to find their new forever home, not just in Union County, but over the entire Pacific Northwest.

3. There are some big changes on the horizon as we continue to provide animal rescue and animal control for Union County---the potential exists for even greater partnership with other individuals and facilities, potential spay-neuter clinics, a low-income spay-neuter fund to help low-income individuals and families provide responsible pet ownership, and structural and functional improvements at the facility itself.

Of course, these services to the people of Union County are not and cannot be free. Despite the fact that some of the operating costs are covered by animal enforcement, there is still a need for additional funding to act on these new ideas, providing even better service to Union County and, through our parter facilities, the entire Pacific Northwest. While we have a core of dedicated volunteers, paid employees are still required to provide the highest-quality care possible for the animals we provide for, and operational costs also include utilities, animal food, facility maintenance, and a very long list of other expenses.

Is a high-save facility important to preserve, not just as a concept, but as a way of saving animal lives? Is it important to develop these other community resources, such as a low-income spay-neuter fund? If so, will you help us in our quest to provide the best animal rescue effort we can? Every penny helps save animal lives.

Because animal lives matter.
