My name is Sarah Gilbert, I'm setting up this campaign for my older sister Ashley Gilbert. On 1/8/17 in the early afternoon, Ashley and her boyfriend Hunter were snowmobiling with friends and Hunter's cousins. Exactly what happened is unknown but when the group ahead of them looked back they had disappeared, Ashley was on the ground and Hunter standing beside her.
Alert 1 flighted her to Kalispell Regional Medical Center, where she was stabilized and found to have an atlanto-occipital dislocation (also called internal decapitation), lung contusion and facial trauma. Alert fixed wing flighted her to Harborview Medical in Seattle Washington last night. Ashley wasn't stable enough for surgery during the night but is headed in at 12:30 p.m. today. The surgery has high risks and the outcome is unknown. Hunter has a severe concussion, but is expected to make a full recovery.
Ashley is the oldest of eight kids, is twenty-seven years old and a single mother of a sweet baby boy named Paxton who is just over one year old.
Funds raised will help pay for Ashley's medical bills, and support her recovery and son. We would like to raise as much as possible soon, by tonight we will know wether she made it through the surgery and what her recovery will look like.
These last twenty fours have been incredibly hard for my whole family, we are all very heartbroken and trying to stay strong for her. Her team of doctors and nurses are taking this one step at a time because even though they are a major trauma center, they don't see this injury very often due to the fact that it's very uncommon for anyone to survive beyond the accident itself. Immediate death is the normal outcome for what she has, so everyone needs to know how God has had his hand of protection on her from the start. Please keep praying.
