April's Aloha Annex

Aloha! My name is April Buxton, I am raising money for the evacuees that are currently living in the parking lot of the Pahoa Community Center. I have been living in Leilani for about a year and now I'm one of those displaced by the current eruption at Kilauea. I have started the April's Aloha Annex to help those that live in the parking lot around me. There are hundreds of people living in makeshift structures and tents because the shelter is at capacity. Although the Red Cross is trying to accommodate the evacuees, they are nowhere near prepared to deal with the current situation. I have set up a separate kitchen and donation tent to get things we actually need like tents, canopys, tarps , cots, camping stoves, air matresses, etc.
We have been preparing meals for overflow evacuees, as well as, anyone who misses the designated meal times at the shelter. We provide canned items and fresh produce to evacuees. We also need to adhere to the Department od Health rules, so we are in need of shelving to store cookware and disposable paper products like plates and napkins. With the help of the World Central Kitchen, we are providing warm meals to everyone. We have been accepting donations at the Annex since the very beginning and I've had to spend my own money to help keep people fed and dry since the East side of the island is known for its rain. We have had only a couple days of sun since this began on May 3, 2018, so we have families that are getting wet in their tents because there are not enough canopys, pallets, and plywood to go around. These supplies are in desperate need.
Please consider donating to this cause so we can get children and adults out of the rain. We are also planning to create an area for the kids to have a space to do arts and crafts since they are not allowed to have scissors and glue in the Shelter. Every penny will be used to support the evacuees and I will post updates here to show our progress with the supplies we are able to purchase.
