Driving. That feeling of independence. The ability to go someplace where and when you need to, and not depend on others for everything. Not feeling trapped, left out, or left behind.  Not having to live by the schedule of others.

Last summer I was able to accomplish something I was never able to before... I got my driver’s license. I didn’t know at first if I could even get my license, but after seeing people in wheelchairs like me driving, I knew I was going to drive someday. I worked hard and did everything I had to do to get my license.

Hi, my name is Ann Heathcote. I am 19 years old and am currently finishing up my first year at Madison College in the Graphic Design and Web Design program. I was born with a genetic condition called, Spinal Muscular Atrophy Type II. I am in a wheelchair and dependent on others for much, but driving is something I am able to do independently.

Being in a wheelchair I haven’t been able to have as much as independence as other people but having and driving a vehicle would give me some back. I have gotten the specifications done for the vehicle and adaptive modifications and am at the point where I need to buy the adaptive vehicle. Through an agency, I will be able to get my adaptions for the vehicle covered, but they will only install the adaptive equipment if the vehicle is new or less than 30,000 miles and 5 years old. This means that I have to purchase a lightly used vehicle. This is still very expensive for me since I am 19 and in college. This is why I need your help.

Being able to drive and have that independence is very important to me. It would allow me to independently get into a vehicle and drive where I need to go, like, appointments, college, and to work. Most people my age would just get in a vehicle and go. They would also be able to use their parent's car or buy a cheap used vehicle. I don’t have that option.

Despite working during my summer and winter break and going to school full time, and working part-time throughout the year, I don’t have enough saved up to make that big of a purchase. I am asking to see if there is anyone who can empathize with my situation, has the heart to help, and the willingness to give to fill my independence need.  My time is running short as the coverage of the modifications will soon expire. Thanks for taking the time to read this and I hope you can help me purchase this part of my independence.

Thank you for your help in my journey to be as independent as possible!

Love,

Ann Heathcote
