Save Our Shelter Animal Village NM

Animal Village NM is the largest no-kill, 501c3 non-profit animal shelter located in New Mexico, the state now ranked the  #1 most poverty-ridden state in the country, #50 in education, and in the top 5 for animal cruelty.  With mostly volunteer help, and paying as we went for every single construction project ( we HAVE ZERO DEBT other than our monthly expenses)- we have built and upgraded and have the most beautiful 9-acre facility for former death-row pets in this state.

Our health and sanitary protocols include the use of bleach pads throughout the facility, having all guests sanitize in between touching any pet, and pre-vaccinating and completely vaccinating our pets. Our pets receive probiotics in volcanic blue green algae, flax seed meal with Omega 3's/6's & 9's every day to support their immune systems. We have recently added a wonderful life-changing supplement, Canine Health, for those dogs most challenged by their former lives.

These safety and health protocols mean that we adopt out vibrantly healthy pets to our adopters, and our reputation for health and support of our former death-row pets has spread throughout the country and further- some of our adopters have very recently traveled from as far as Canada, Colorado, Minnesota and California to adopt mixed our breed pets.

We are happy to have maintained these standards, in a state ridden with parvo and distemper, feline leukemia and feline aids due to lack of vaccinations in animal control facilities, huge numbers of counties without mandatory spay/neuter laws,  and a disproportionate lack of veterinary care provided by pet owners.

We normally house between 75-100 pets, but as of September 2014 we have had to limit any rescue activity to puppies, pregnant or nursing mothers, and our own adopted pets who were again found on death-row or returned to us.  We have kept a lifetime commitment to every pet we have adopted, taking them back when they are no longer going to be kept by their adopters for whatever reason. We want to keep that commitment by remaining open to save them when needed, and to save thousands of pets in danger every year in this state.

We offer free onsite canine training classes to every adopter, and stock a pet food bank with donated food from Walmart and community residents that helps needy pet guardians in 3 counties.

We advocate for the welfare of pets, fighting against chaining, dog-fighting, and fighting non-stop for the enforcement and improvement of existing animal cruelty laws.  Animal Village NM recently led a charge to support Dogs Deserve Better's annual valentine campaign, sending hundreds of handmade valentine cards to DDB, to be sent to owners of chained dogs all over the country. All cards were made by local residents. AVNM director, Sunny Aris, is an Animal Protection of New Mexico Milagro Award winner for raising awareness of animal cruelty issues.

Our radio show, "Animal Village Radio" broadcasts live every Monday morning on KRSY AM 1230, bringing awareness to local and national animal welfare issues, and broadcasting the services and needs of Animal Village NM.

The  Animal Village NM's very active Facebook page elicits up to 70,000 views per month, and features the 'real world' of animal rescue, inclusive of the adoptable pets, the real life tragedies, successes, joys and failures of adoption efforts, to make people aware of the plights and real work involved in running a no-kill animal shelter. We tell the happy stories, and the hard stories, to make sure people realize what happens behind the scenes, even in the best of the rescue world, the no-kill shelter.

Since November 2010 we have rescued death-row dogs and cats from animal control facilities all over the state, and all of our pets are spayed or neutered, microchipped, and vaccinated. We offer free canine training for all adopters, a lifetime commitment to every adopted pets, offer a beautiful boarding facility that helps with expenses even with our low rates, offer a pet food bank that serves pet guardians in need in 2 counties, and have 10 paid employees.

We have rescued as many as 35 pets in one day, have never bounced a check and have always paid our employees on time, and have zero debt. More than one million dollars has been spent to create this beautiful no-kill shelter, and we owe no one but our monthly vendors, staff and veterinarians- but at this time we are in danger of closing our doors due to lack of sufficient donations. We are not funded by any municipality, city, state or national organization, although local organizations have made small donations over the years and are greatly appreciated.

In September 2014 our computer files and accounting records were destoyed, a situation that has crippled our shelter and caused a terrible financial crisis.  The Otero County Sherrif's Department and District Attorney's office have been of huge help investigating this situation, but were unable to recover enough of our information to resolve the situation at the time of this writing.  We have had to pay to literally rebuild all the data bases we paid to have built, which has taken months, even with volunteer and paid staff, and has cost thousands of dollars, to retain the integrity of our 501c3 non-profit status. We have meanwhile had the same salary, repair, veterinary, equipment and supply costs of housing dozens of pets as usual, with that heavy financial burden added to it.

While monthly donations have significantly increased in the last few months we are far short of sufficient funding to continue, and our personal funds have been spent.

If we cannot raise at least $25,000.00 to pay our staff, vendors and supply costs in the next 15 days we will have to close our doors for good, leaving thousands of loyal abandoned dogs and cats without the hope of rescue by the largest no-kill facility in New Mexico now, or in the future. There has never been a true shelter like Animal Village NM in this state, offering so much to so many pets and humans, and it is doubtful there will ever be again if Animal Village NM is forced to close.

For a state with so much poverty, ranked so high in animal cruelty, the loss of our beautiful shelter would have a huge impact both now and for the future.

We sincerely hope that you will support this effort so that we can continue our rescue work for many years to come.
