Angels of Addictions was conceived by Anne Marie Farley Zanfagna about a year after the death of her youngest daughter, Jacqueline Zanfagna. Jacqueline died of a heroin overdose on October 18, 2014. At the time of Jackie's death, her parents, Anne and Jim Zanfagna made the decision to be open with her cause of death in hopes of raising awareness of heroin addiction.
After Jacqueline passed away, Anne Marie, an artist who works with oil paints, found she could not paint. When she finally began to paint again, she painted a vibrant, joyful portrait of Jackie which she worked on over the period of a couple of months. Anne felt that the time spent working on her painting of Jacqueline was time spent with her daughter.
Anne brought her painting of Jackie to the heroin addiction support group called Mercy Street in Plaistow, NH. The response from the group led to Anne Marie offering to paint a portrait for another family who had also lost their daughter to a heroin overdose.
One personal connection led to others, and then even more. Anne Marie's goal is for her portraits to show the person who was loved and loved others, instead of the disease. Since beginning AOA, Anne Marie consistently receives requests for portraits from all over the country. She is committed to honoring every request, regardless of an ability to cover the cost of the supplies or shipment. To date, she has completed nearly 200 portraits, and she maintains a list of requests that has up to a year wait list due to the number of requests she has already.
Money raised here on GoFundMe will be used to further the mission of Angels of Addictions. We work to raise awareness by sharing portraits publicly in various settings; and speaking to the need for awareness, treatment, and reducing stigma.
Meanwhile, our country's losses continue to grow. When Angels of Addictions began, we were loosing 129 people every day due to Substance Use Disorder. Sadly, that number has increased to over 190 people that we lose EVERY DAY.
Anne Marie Zanfagna's portraits are a true testament to the power of art therapy. Her heart and soul go into every portrait painting that she does. Donations to Angels of Addictions will mean so much as she strives each day to raise awareness of opioid addiction.
