Angela's Dental Elective in Nepal

I'm a 4th year dental student at Bristol University and as part of my elective project, I will be going to Kathmandu, Nepal for 2 weeks in July 2019. During my stay I will be volunteering in a local hospital, where I will be treating patients and gaining invaluable experience of how dentistry differs in this part of the world.
My choice to go abroad was primarily driven by my desire to step out of my comfort zone. I firmly believe that Kathmandu will give me the opportunity to undertake new challenges that I would never be able to do otherwise. Coming from The Philippines, I have witnessed first-hand how difficult it is to deliver good quality dental care in a low-resource healthcare setting, so I am very passionate about helping those who are less privileged and would really like to do my part.
My placement in Nepal has been secured with Work the World , an amazing organisation that arranges overseas healthcare placements for students around the globe. The total cost of the placement is £1290 which I aim to raise myself. While part of the money will go towards my accommodation in Nepal, the rest will be donated to the local hospitals, allowing them to upgrade their resources and purchase some much needed equipment.
Over the coming year I plan to complete various fundraising events with my best friend Beth who is also planning to go to Nepal with me. We plan to undertake a number of bakes sales, a sponsored ‘Dry January’ and a number of charity pub quizzes. I am also planning to undertake the Bristol 10k with a number of friends who have graciously agreed to help me raise the funds I need. If you'd like to give a helping hand, any donation would be sincerely appreciated by myself and the people it will be helping in Kathmandu.
