Angaza. To spread light.
Angaza is the band name of a group of developing musicians I had the opportunity to work with in the rolling hills of a small community called Maia Mahiu outside of Nairobi, Kenya.
Since then, they have been steady in their work.
In violent times their music has been a pillar for peace.
With your donation you are uplifting their ideas and supporting their dance.
Rising from the rubble of life and paving a path to gather in solitude, they patiently and thankfully continue to devote effort toward something they believe.
These families live in what are known as IDP (internally displaced persons) camps. The individuals that make up Angaza spend most of their time working on music. However, if small job opportunities arise they take them to help bring in money for their families. This includes working with the elderly assisting with daily chores such as washing clothes, fetching water, and cleaning their compounds.
These IDP camps were created because of the 2007 Presidential election which triggered an explosion of ethnic violence due to tribal conflict. Families were forced off their lands. Hundreds of families not only lost their homes but, even worse, their loved ones. As heartbreaking and unimaginable as their stories are, they continue to hope. Hope for their children to go to school, hope for their lost family members to find their way back to them, hope for love to overcome hate and for peace to trump violence.
It is my hope that you can join us in keeping up the good fight. These young adults created Angaza in order to shine a light in a dark place. They want to sing of their blessings and dance for their triumphs. Young people are often targeted by politicians to spread hatred and violence. Angaza aspires to reach youths in other communities to share their message of peace.
With financial support we can get them in the studio. Recording powerful messages, covering great lands to inspire communty near and far. Building bridges. Mending painful pasts to mark the mighty bounty of the present. Let's move together through this wild world.
