What happened:

On the 1st of December 2016, through no fault of his own, Andrew O'Malley was involved in an accident in the gym and is now quadriplegic. He can move his head and neck and has some slight shoulder movement. Andrew has been told that he will not regain any further movement in the rest of his body.

The owner of the gym did not have any insurance and has since left the country, leaving Andrew with no possibility of any form of compensation.

Andrew has been in an acute hospital setting since his accident. He is currently awaiting a decision from the HSE as to where he should go next. The problem is, there are no facilities in Ireland which cater for young people with Andrew's medical problems.

Andrew would eventually love to live in some form of an assisted living situation. However, he is a long way away from that.

Throughout this whole ordeal Andrew has remained remarkably strong. His mental strength and positive outlook have been inspirational.  His physiotherapy sessions have been instrumental in maintaining this positive outlook.

Unfortunately, Andrew's physiotherapy sessions have been cut from 6 hours a week to a mere 1.5 hours.

Due to Andrew's spinal cord injury, he has a number of other medical issues:

> Andrew now has very weak lungs and often struggles to catch his breath. He is susceptible to chest infections and needs regular intervention by medical staff to clear his airways. He has a tracheotomy for when these emergencies occur.
> Andrew also has autonomic dysreflexia - this develops in individuals with spinal cord injury, resulting in acute, uncontrolled high blood pressure. This is a life threatening condition and as a result, Andrew must be constantly and closely monitored.
> Andrew now has a very weak swallow reflex. Additionally, his windpipe does not always close when he swallows. Because of this, there is the potential that Andrew could choke on food or even his own saliva.

All money raised will be used in a number of ways:

> Purchase expensive and necessary medical equipment.
> Daytrips for Andrew - necessary to maintain his mental health and to allow him to live his life. Andrew has been out of a hospital setting only a handful of times since his accident. These trips are expensive to arrange as Andrew requires specialised transport and support.
> Paying medical bills
> Pay for vital physiotherapy sessions.
> Enable Andrew to fulfill his dream of one day living as independently as possible.
> Safeguarding for Andrew's future - we do not know what Andrew's future holds. What we do know is that there will be many unforseen expenses to come.

Your donations will help Andrew to achieve his goal of living as independently as he can.

Andrew is a 32-year-old man with his whole life ahead of him. He is now in limbo. He is existing… he needs to start living again.

Andrew has been working on improving his lung capacity and as part of this has been developing public speaking skills. Here is a speech which Andrew delivered to staff at the NRH in which he speaks about his accident.

It really shows how amazing and mentally strong he is.

Once again, thank you for help in raising €9,916 already. Can we make it past the €10,000 mark this weekend?

We have some developments which we would like to share with you in time (we can’t at the minute as things are still developing). To that end, we have established a facebook page https://www.facebook.com/helpandrewomalley/

We would be very grateful if you could like our page to keep up to date with Andrew’s progress, spread awareness of our campaign and to stay informed of future fundraisers.

It would also be amazing if you could recommend our page to your friends who may not have heard Andrew’s story.

Thank you and have a great long weekend!

Thank you so much to everyone who has donated or shared the campaign on social media. We are blown away by your support and generosity. We still need your help to get the word out about Andrew’s situation.

Could you do the following three things?

1. Share this GoFundMe page on social media and tag five friends in the post. Ask them to tag five friends who in turn tag five friends and so on. Liking and commenting on each other’s posts also increases visibility of these posts which is so important.

2. Like, share and comment on this press release from Stephen Donnelly TD who has been helping fight with the HSE to get funding for a suitable placement for Andrew https://www.facebook.com/DonnellyforWicklow/posts/2281422205231115.

3. Read and share this article on social media about Andrew that was featured in the Irish Mail and on extra.ie today https://extra.ie/2018/03/26/news/real-life/andrew-omalley-paralysed-support-life.

Again, thank you so much for everything so far. We have a long road ahead of us but we hope we can get there – but only with your help!

Andrew & Emma in the NRH, Dun Laoghaire
