The Anaak Mission—Fundraiser

After two decades of working in the corporate fashion industry, fostering and launching emerging young designers and artists, I took the leap to follow a lifelong dream of starting my own brand with an ethos of giving back to the community. With a yearning to contribute to the world in a more tangible and meaningful way, alongside a love of textiles and artisans, Anaak was launched in 2014.
Anaak derives its name from the Filipino dialect Tagalog’s word for child. A term of endearment bestowed upon me by my mother. It is perfectly evocative of the feeling of the brand —just like a child, joyfully open with a permanent sense of wide-eyed wonder.
Completely self-funded from personal savings, Anaak was founded with a commitment to support the livelihood of artisans in rural areas, rooting in direct trade with a hands-on approach to expand business opportunities within local communities in India, South America and beyond.
For this to happen, I live half the year overseas, personally visiting each remote village to inspect working conditions. Anaak works particularly with women in rural areas, ensuring each worker receives fair compensation; creating garments ethically and sustainably. Anaak partners with cooperatives, charitable trusts and non-profit organizations on collaborative projects. Partnerships are carefully chosen to aid greater outreach while promoting Anaak’s core values for a positive impact on the wider community.
Each Anaak piece is handcrafted by skilled craftspeople throughout the world, from spinning the fibers into yarn, natural dyeing, weaving, knitting or crocheting, through to washing and finishing.
Every effort is made to focus on the use of natural fibers from cotton, wool, alpaca and silk. Dyers use azo-free, eco-friendly vegetable dyes for a range of subtle hues, the yarn spinners hand-loom organic, raw fiber into yarn, the printers block-print patterns by hand onto the fabrics, and the embroiderers stitch each of the garments with their distinctive patterns. Working in close proximity to where materials originate, Anaak engages in small-scale production and offer localized, ongoing business support.
Your support will directly benefit the women and artisans who create each and every piece. Funds will be used for raw materials: yarns, fabrics, buttons, zippers, etc., support production, create job opportunities and enable fair trade compensation for the artisans, enable close working relationships with our artisans to ensure safe and mindful conditions, supply showroom fees; increasing sales and press to build brand awareness for Anaak and partners.
As a wholesale brand, I pay for everything up front – materials, wages, shipping, duties, sales, etc. but do not receive payment for our work until around 6 months later. As sales constantly surpass plan and continue to grow exponentially each season cash needs are continue to grow. Nevertheless, every penny of profit goes back into the brand and artisan work. Your contribution will see Anaak through this initial hump and aid in the growth of the brand.
It truly takes a village. Your help will be an investment in Anaak’s business and directly touch the lives of every person we work with. Help us set an example of how small ethical practices can (and should) be executed and be a part of the change we need to see and feel in the world today!
