Amelia Rising Sexual Assault Centre of Nipissing

To honor May as Sexual Assault Awareness Month, Amelia Rising Sexual Assault Center is launching our second annual Photovoice project, a series of wellness workshops, as well as a billboard campaign to increase our community’s understanding of the prevalence, and the impact, of sexual assault.

This year’s Photovoice project will focus on how dominant myths about sexual assault, survivors, and perpetrators of violence, impact a survivor’s path to healing.  Beginning in January, survivors of sexual violence will be provided with a safe and supportive space in which to reflect on, and document, their personal experience of sexual violence through the use of photography and storytelling. The project will culminate in a public art exhibit that will empower survivors to speak their truth to power, and to furthermore challenge community members to stand in solidarity with survivors, and against violence.

In conjunction with the Photovoice project, we will also be extending a warm welcome to our community to join us in a series of wellness workshops throughout the month of May. We will be providing introductory classes on yoga, meditation, creative writing, as well as celebrating our collective survival through the use of drums.

Lastly, as a means to extend our reach, and our community’s awareness of sexual violence, we have secured a billboard rental for the month of May. The latter will also be used to invite community members to our grand opening of Photovoice.

Amelia Rising Sexual Assault Centre of Nipissing is a non-profit, feminist, organization servicing the North Bay and Nipissing region. We provide essential supportive and therapeutic services to women, as well as persons who identify as transgender, genderqueer, or 2-spirited who have survived what is, at times, unspeakable. Your donation will help empower survivors of sexual violence to reclaim their voices, rediscover their power, and reach their community.

We are grateful for your continued support.
