Alternative Pathways to University

Clemente Tasmania is a volunteer group which offers a certificate  in Liberal Studies as an alternative pathway to university. It is open to anyone who, due to life circumstances, has had their education severely disrupted or do not satisfy the usual requirements for university entrance. Students include those who have been asylum seekers, homeless, domestic abuse victims, sufferers of mental illness, indigenous people, immigrants whose qualifications are not recognised in Australia, parolees, single parents, the poor ...

Each student is matched with a mentor. Opportunities to socialise with each other and the community is important too so we provide some refreshments during the break in the two hour lectures. There is no cost to the students so we need to raise money to pay for

the lecturers. There are two units offered each year and each unit costs about $6000.

The first group graduated last December and two of the students have since been offered scholarships from the University of Tasmania so we are feeling very excited and want the program to continue. Education is giving these students a great sense of achievement and self worth and allows them to positively re-engage with the broader community.
We enjoy working with them and would be grateful for any support so that the wonderful program can continue.
