All for Les

On July 29, 2019, the world lost a great man...my father-in-law, Leslie Peters.  We lost him tragically to a heart attack he experienced while working with carriage horses in Acadia National Park .  His loss will be felt throughout not only our family, but the community as well.

Anyone who knew Les, knew how much he loved life.  His friends and family were the most important thing to him, especially Kathi, his wife of 52 years,  whom he loved very much.   Les enjoyed hunting, fishing and driving horses.  He and Kathi spent countless hours driving horse carriages together.   He also served as an Advisory Trustee of the carriage museum at Skyline Farm for many years.

Les was the most amazing story teller.  Some of his friends would even joke with him that he was "The Most Interesting Man In The World" - (thank you Dos Equis!).  His life was rich with memories of growing up in Kenya, Africa, climbing Mount Kilimanjaro, his days spent in the rock and roll band "The Bushmen", touring through Europe, and many other wonderful stories from a truly remarkable man.

Les worked in the hunting department at L.L. Bean in Freeport, Maine, a job he took very seriously and loved immensely.  He loved  hunting and took great pride and pleasure in sharing his love of this sport with customers, friends and anyone who was within earshot.

But it was his love of horses and driving carriages that brought him to Acadia National Park where he and Kathi would drive carriages for guests and he would captivate them with his knowledge of the true history of the trails of Acadia.

Late Monday afternoon, while Les was finishing up with the horses for the day in Acadia, he thought he was experiencing heat stroke.   Several friends rushed to his aid, giving him fluids, cooling him down and rushing him to the hospital in Bar Harbor to provide further aid.

Once admitted to the hospital, it was clear to the doctors that Les was not suffering from heat stroke, but from a heart attack.   They administered medicine to attempt to remove blockages and Les was air lifted to Eastern Maine Medical Center via Lifeflight where the doctors did what they could, but could not save him.

Just like that, this man who had been so full of life only hours before, was gone.

Les' passion for life and people did not make him a wealthy man.  He and Kathi  led a simple life on a small farm in coastal Maine with their two horses and beloved dog, Nellie.

Kathi, an artist, suffered her own tragedy several years ago when she had a stroke that changed their life.  Les was and continued to be a constant support in Kathi's recovery and day-to-day life.

No one is truly prepared to lose a loved one, emotionally or financially.  The small amount of life insurance Les had will not even begin to relieve the financial burden of the medical expenses, Lifeflight and unpaid bills.

Please consider a donation, if you can, to help lessen the financial stress this tragic loss has left our family with.

Alternately, you can also offer your support by purchasing a piece of art from Kathi.  Please visit her website at www.kathipeters.com
