Hello! I am Tim Rubel, Artistic Director of Tim Rubel Human Shakes.

We are a small professional contemporary dance company based in San Francisco, CA.  We are in the middle of our sixth season, and we couldn't be more excited about our latest project in development.

I am currently creating with my six incredible dancers, a new work entitled "Alien." This work is being co-choreographed with my colleague Elisabeth Kindler-Abali, who is a dance artist based in Berlin, Germany. Elisabeth will be joining us for two intensive periods of rehearsal in March and June, to work directly with us. "Alien" will premiere in San Francisco at CounterPulse June 14-16th, 2018 and then we will tour to Berlin to premiere this work at Pfefferberg Theater, September 8-9th. The purpose of this campaign is to support the cost of our travel, accommodations and production costs in Germany. We need to secure these funds by the end of May in order to get our flights covered, find reasonable and comfortable places to stay for myself and six dancers for a week, compensate everyone for their hard work, and pay for our technical crew at the Pfefferberg Theater.

This is a huge undertaking, and so your support for this project will be transformative. This is our first tour and the first time our work will be seen internationally. With your help, we will not only be able to grow as a group of artists, but you will be supporting a work that truly speaks to the complicated times we are living in as human beings.

On that note, please read on, and also check out our video to get the scoop of our project.

Alien depicts members of a fictional human race who have come to a new land seeking refuge from their home country, which is in turmoil. Upon their arrival, they discover how their presence is feared and questioned by many of their new country's inhabitants. They also learn how other marginalized communities are viewed by their cultural majorities. As these newcomers are thrust into an environment of displacement, assimilation and surveillance, they find strength in the their differences and insist on being seen authentically by their new societies. This piece is inspired by stories of immigrants to the United States and Europe, as well as by our own personal stories of being "othered" because of who we are. In a time when certain political leaders, including our sitting President, seek to divide people from each other based on their differences, we invite people to have a shared experience of empathy through the transformative power of dance.

The sound and music score will be created by electronic composer David Molina. This will be my second collaboration with Mr. Molina, who will also be contributing to our research by sharing his story of growing up as the child of Latino immigrants.

We hope you will help us reach our goal and share this important work with as many people as possible. Thank you!
