Alicia's Story

As many of you know, our mom began her battle
with breast cancer 11 years ago this December.

She has fought hard every step of the way &
has had many joyful moments, days, & years since then
with her family & friends; but it's been a long
road.
The last two years have been especially difficult
for her, with the last several weeks being progressively
challenging.
Her road has been filled with lots of ups &
downs, including her cancer spreading to other parts of her body.
One of the places it spread was to her brain,
requiring brain surgery & then intense radiation to the
brain; in addition to the chemotherapy treatments she has received over the years. That's the short version
anyway.
Her balance, speech, strength, ability to work
& to drive have all been affected, among other
things.
Unfortunately the radiation has also taken a
great toll on her brain, causing dementia, which has
progressively worsened over time.
It has recently progressed more rapidly &
severely, & the road has now led her to become a
resident at the Kemper house nursing facility; where she is well cared for & safe.
Unfortunately, due to some aspects of her
dementia, it had become more & more difficult to keep
her safe at home with us.
She is well cared for during moments we cannot be
with her, but she is nearby, we visit often, and continue to love & support her the best we can every day.

Of course as she has traveled this road, each one
of us has traveled it with her. Each of us w/our own
journey, & having dealt with it as best we can & in
our own ways.
Our dad, every step of the way, has not only kept
her needs at the forefront; but has continued to work full time, kept our household running, & somehow managed the steady trail of medical & dental bills that has also been part of this road.
Athough the best & safest place for her, also
comes with an extreme financial hardship of daily room & board costs that aren't covered by any insurances.

We watch our dad work so hard every day.
His love for our mom & our family,
and commitment to doing whatever it takes, is truly amazing; but we want to be able to help him right
now.
We are hoping to raise money to help him pay for
her hospice care, at the Kemper house to lessen some of the financial & emotional stress for him. We know he is strong & will continue to do anything for her, but we worry about him too & want to lessen his load in some way.

We appreciate any monetary
donations you can give & would also welcome
letters, cards, & stories of fond memories of her that
we can share with her to help brighten any & all of her
days ahead.
