Alex’s Story
On December 21, 2018, 25-year-old Kittery, Maine native Alex Thayer’s world turned upside-down. She was immediately rushed into surgery at Tufts Medical Center in Boston, MA for a 16-pound ovarian cyst. We hoped and prayed the cyst would come back with a benign finding, but that was not to be. Instead, a 16-pound cancerous ovarian tumor was discovered. Although her recent surgery was successful, Alex’s stressful and daunting journey is only just beginning. Alex must now undergo chemotherapy to ward off any cancer cells from spreading.
A Little Bit About Alex Thayer
Alex works tirelessly as an experienced veterinary technician while running the large and busy adoption program at the Kittery Animal Hospital in Kittery, Maine. She is a dedicated member of her community with a keen passion for the environment and the world around her. Her dedication and love for her patients at the Kittery Animal Hospital is extraordinary as her unwavering love and respect for her family and friends is unprecedented. Alex is a strong individual with a stronger will to live a long life. She needs your help.
Insurance or Not
In March 2019, Alex will no longer qualify for insurance as a dependent on her family plan and must pay out-of-pocket for insurance and extra costs over and above what insurance does not cover. The average out-of-pocket cost for chemotherapy for the initial treatment is approximately $7,000. An eight-week treatment can run up to an average of approximately $30,000. Most insurance companies may only pay an 80% dividend leaving the remaining 20% as an out-of-pocket expense for the patient to pay. This is why Alex needs your support.

Benefit for the “Alex Thayer Fund”
A benefit to raise funds for Alex’s treatment will take place on March 2, 2019, at the Portsmouth Harbor Event Center from 6-10 PM. The ticket donation price is $15 per person which includes refreshments, cash bar, silent auctions, raffle items, and a live band (The Grim Brothers Band). Cash and checks will be accepted as payment (no credit cards). Tickets will be available at the door. The benefit is hosted by Kittery Animal Hospital and Marja Corporation. This benefit is being organized for Alex and her family to focus on Alex’s road to recovery. Let’s all have some fun, raise some funds, and show support for Alex Thayer on her journey. She Fights, We Fight, Team Alex!!
