Alex Gardega Memorial

Alex Gardega touched many lives in many ways. For most it was through his art. For some it was his strong headedness, his sense of humor or through his love or need to be loved. In my life my brother held many roles; confidant, art teacher, friend, idol, and in our youth Dungeons and Dragons Master of exception.  If you met Alex you know already he left an impression. If you found your life somehow intermingled with his it frequently suffused within his creativity.

Alex was inseperable from his art.  All of you became part of him and his art, to the delight of most.  What he saw each day, that inspired him. NYC, the farm he grew up on in Texas and Cold Spring Harbor, were all foundation in his identity. There are two notable places in his life where he drew inspiration and they can be seen repeatedly throughout his work. the The Metropolitan Museum of Art was one, and his reverence can be seen in his series of Observer paintings. The other is Central Park, particularly near the Boat House. The number of cartoons, illustrations and paintings inspired from this storied park is testimony to the bond he felt with them. In honor of the comfort he found there and the inspiration that was the expression of that love, we are launching this fund to memorialize him with a Park Bench in Central Park.

We ask that instead of sending flowers or food, people donate to raise money for a memorial in the form of a Park Bench in Central Park near the Boat House. We feel a Park Bench will provide similar comfort and inspiration to a new generation of creative people, artists or visitors for many years to come. Hopefully it will serve as a reminder that a life spent in pure artistic, creative pursuits is both justified and beautiful.

The initial goal is for $10,000 to be used for the commemorative plaque and Central Park bench.  Any funds beyond the initial goal will be used for funeral expenses.  Beyond that, a scholarship in his name to promote and protect artists and creative pursuits.
