Alec’s Army Against ALD

This is Alec, a six-year old first grader in my class this year.  

Alec is a smart and funny chatterbox, full of energy.  From the moment I met him, he charmed me.  After a  great year at the top of his kindergarten class, Alec began regressing and having serious vision problems .  We recently learned that Alec is fighting a debilitating genetic disorder called ALD (Adrenoleukodystrophy- the Lorenzo’s Oil disease). ALD attacks the brain and destroys the myelin that is required for your brain to transmit information effectively.  At this time, Alec has already lost a great deal of his vision.  This rapidly progressive disorder does not have a cure or even many treatment options.  

 Alec is now being evaluated for a bone marrow transplant that could slow the progression of the disease. However, it can take 6 months for the bone marrow to be effective.  During this time, the disease continues to cause damage to the brain, affecting his vision, hearing, motor skills, and language. 

Time is of the essence. 
 
We are on a mission to give Alec as many experiences as we can before he loses his sight and other abilities, as well as assisting the family with overwhelming medical and travel expenses. Alec’s family currently drives him 140 miles round trip almost daily for appointments.

Despite everything he is going through, Alec remains the happiest little boy.  He still attends school between appointments as frequently as possible. Please open your hearts and your wallets and donate to this amazing little boy!
