Alan Hopkins, Jr.

At some time in the early morning hours of April 9th, 2018, Alan Hopkins, Jr. suffered a stroke.  He was brought to the emergency room at Bridgeport Hospital.  Later that afternoon he was transferred to Yale New Haven Hospital's Stroke Unit due to swelling in his brain.  Alan is a fit and healthy young person who has absolutely no stroke risk factors and doctors are unable to determine the cause at this time.  Alan's stroke was in his left frontal lobe, which is quite rare.  Initially he could not move the right side of his body and his speech was labored, when he could actually figure out the right things to say.  But, when he spoke, boy did he make us laugh.  Alan began improving in the hospital and was transferred to Yale's Inpatient Rehabilitation Unit.

Alan is currently receiving Physical, Occupational, and Speech Therapies to help him learn to walk, to perform his own self care, and to communicate functionally again.  He will spend almost four weeks in rehab and will progress to outpatient therapy.  We are hopeful that he will make a full recovery.

Both Alan and his amazing partner Mike are beginning to face the reality of their current situation.  The road to recovery is long.  Alan and Mike  will have medical bills to pay and household bills.

So far, Alan and Mike have been managing, but the journey back to independence is ongoing.  Words cannot express how appreciative we are for the love and support of friends and family over the last two and a half weeks.  I am reaching out on behalf of my closest friends who are loving and supportive of everyone else.  I will post updates as Alan progresses.
