Akilah's Scholastic Award Trip

Donation protected
My name is Akilah Toney and I am a 14-year-old NOCCA student and poet from New Orleans, LA. Recently, I won a regional Scholastic Art & Writing Award. I sumbitted three poems titled, "insecure words", "Blue Suede Shoes" and "Her." I won two gold keys (which is one of the biggest honors you can receive) and a honorable mention. Then, I entered the national writing awards and won a gold medal best in grade award. 33,330 students submitted art and writing this year, meaning I have a place in the top 1% of submissions. The poem receiving the award is "insecure words". This is such a big deal because I have been invited to New York for the award ceremony at Carnegie Hall. From June 7th-June 9th I will be doing a number of activities surrounding the awards and the great New York City. With the help of your donation I can get the opportunity to have my poetry honored among others like Andy Warhol and Sylvia Plath.

The donations will go toward my plane tickets, hotel fees, and transportation fees. I've never rode a plane, so this will be a new experience travel wise. While this trip may be a new travel experience, it will also be a new experience artistically. I am one of the youngest people in the Scholastic Art & Writing awards to recive this amazing honor. This gives me the ability as a young Black artist to know that other people notice and even relate to my work. And by going to New York I will be able to celebrate other young artists who can relate to me.

As a token of gratitude, donors will receive a zine of my lastest poetry and other works. The zine will also feature my Scholastic Art & Writing entry, "insecure words".
