Ak'Tenamit School -- Eagle Scout Project

Donation protected
Join me to help improve the lives of the students at the Ak'Tenamit School in Guatemala. The Ak'Tenamit is an idigenous community development that promotes and preserves the cultural identity of the Q'eqchi Mayan 7th through 12th grade students who attend the school. It is located on the Dulce river in eastern Guatemala.  The students come from all parts of Guatemala speaking their native language to learn all aspects of Rural Community Development or Sustainable Tourism. At the completion of their studies they are ready to serve their local communities. The school's mission is to provide local youth with the education and practical experience needed to graduate with the necessary skills to obtain gainful employment in the area.

My service project plays a small but important role in the lives of the student. There are two main goals involved:

1.) Help reduce malaria through use of Mosquito nets.
These nets provide valuable protection from mosquitos who can bite unprotected students in the middle of the night without them ever knowing.  My goal is to provide 500  nets. These nets must constantly be replaced because they become frayed and may have holes in them. Also, the insecticide-treated nets also lose their effectiveness after a period of time.  And,

2) Varnish outside buildings
The wet and tropical climate of eastern Guatemala means all buildings and outside furniture must receive a new coat of varnish and conditioning for the upcoming year. The varnish must be purchased in Guatemala. My project includes determining which buildings and outside furniture needs conditioning, what materials are needed, and organizing the students and fellow Scouts to assist me in completing the sanding, staining and varnishing.

I've selected this as my Eagle Scout Project because nothing appeals to me more than the opportunity to use my leadership and practical skills in order to better the lives of those who need help. I will be traveling to Guatemala during the last week of July and your support will help me to accomplish my project and help improve the lives of the Ak'Tenamit students.

Thank you so much for your support.
