Aiming For Amherst

We are thrilled to announce that Meadow Elementary School has won 1st Place in New York State in the Community Problem Solving Competition at the Future Problem Solver New York State Bowl. Fifteen students have been invited to participate at the International Future Problem Solving Competition in June at The University of Massachusetts, Amherst.

This is Meadow Elementary School's first year participating in the Future Problem Solver Program International (FPSPI).  The Future Problem Solving Program was founded in 1974 by creativity pioneer, Dr. E. Paul Torrance. FPSPI stimulates critical and creative thinking skills, encourages students to develop a vision for the future, and prepares students for leadership roles. FPSPI engages students in creative problem solving within the curriculum and provides competitive opportunities.  FPSPI involves thousands of students annually from Australia, Hong Kong, India, Japan, Korea, Malaysia, New Zealand, Portugal, Singapore, Turkey, United Kingdom, and the United States.

The students will represent New York State and compete against teams from 50 states and 14 countries from around the world. This is not only a win for the students, this is a win for Meadow Elementary School, and a win for Baldwin Public Schools!

The fifteen Community Problem Solver students worked together to use the six-step problem solving process to solve a real-world problem in the community. The students have been working all school year to promote kindness and foster a positive learning environment. The students started a #Kindness4Life campaign, created a monthly "Kindness Day," filled the halls with kindness posters, implemented a peer mediation program, and started a morning greeters program to start each day with kindness smiles for their peers.

There is a large cost associated with sending the students to Massachusetts to compete in the 5-day competition. The cost is roughly $700 per person, which includes competition registration fees, room and board, and travel expenses. We are hoping to be able to send the 15 students, 2 staff chaperones, and 4 parent chaperones. We are hoping to raise $15,000 by May 15th to be able to fully fund the trip and allow them to participate in this amazing opportunity.

We are reaching out to private and public organizations throughout our community and state for support. Any monetary contributions will go a long way toward reaching our goal! Additionally, any publicity support to spread the word about our cause will also go a long way towards reaching our goal.

Thank you in advance for your support!

Sincerely,
The Kind Kids of Meadow Elementary School!
