Aid for Labs is a non-profit organization, dedicated mainly to the transfer of scientific equipment and know-how to local organizations in developing countries allowing these to gain access to resources needed to address local problems.

We are a group of motivated volunteers who are aware of the struggles scientists in developing countries encounter on a daily basis in order to conduct research, while tons of outdated and obsolete laboratory equipment collect dust on the backrooms of laboratories all over developed countries. Our goal is to sustain science in developing countries by transfering equipment to where it is needed. Our ideal is that every country on this planet should have a fair chance to develop its full research and development potential, and thereby support the progress of its society.

One of the main objectives of Aid for Labs is to coordinate the collection and distribution of used scientific, medical, and teaching equipments. Aid for Labs works in partnership with local universities, laboratories or schools in developing countries. We provide scientific equipments for the training of students and laboratory technicians as well as helping research laboratories to pursue research projects in those countries.

Through an Indonesian colleague at the European Molecular Biology Laboratory (EMBL),  we identified one university in Indonesia that is in a need for some equipment for their Lab at the Faculty of Biology, Jenderal Soedirman University.  The university is located in the rural area of the medium-sized town of Purwokerto (population 80.000 inhabitants) on the base of Mount Slamet, the 2nd highest volcano in Java.

The lab works on population genetics of plants and animals as well as barcoding of microbial communities and is in need of general equipment such as PCR machines, electrophoresis chambers, gel documentation systems, nano drop, etc.).

As a non-profit organization, Aid for Labs doesn’t have a core funding and rely on support and donation. Aid for Labs volunteers have collected some equipment that are not used anymore but still fully functional from many labs at EMBL. We are currently raising funds to ship the equipment to Indonesia. Our goal is 1500 EUR. Any leftover funds after the goal has been reached will be used for the next Aid for Labs projects.
