AGUAMOSLO JUNTOS – LET’S GIVE THEM WATER TOGETHER
We are a group of 72 exchange students in the age of 15-19, all in Peru, thanks to the Rotary Youth Exchange Program. We come from 13 different countries; Germany, USA, Finland, France, Austria, Denmark, Brazil, Italy, Belgium, Netherlands, Czech Republic, Canada and Switzerland. We live with hostfamilies from the whole country, where we meet a new culture, and also learn a new language. Peru is the only country, where the exchange students take part in the charity work of Rotary.
We have chosen to make the project in the following places: Pucallpa, San Pedro de Manati and the inhabitants of island Amantani, which we visited in September.
Information about PUCALLPA:
The village Pucallpa is located in the district of Indiana, the province Maynas, in the part of Peru called Loreto. To reach the village, you have to fly 1,5 hours from Lima to Iquitos, and afterwards about 2 hours on boat. In Pucallpa lives about 67 families, who mainly works with harvest of rice and bananas, and fishing in the Amazon River.
Pucallpa has one school, with 42 students, thanks to the 2 volunteering teachers. To go to “Secundaria” (high school), you need to travel to Santa Rosa, a bigger village. They don’t have electricity, nor access to clean water. A few of the families have installed solar cells.
The inhabitants drink water from the polluted river. The water from the river is also used to wash their dirty clothes, shower and to cook. Trash, from Iquitos, is floating in the water. The inhabitants burn the trash, which creates a very polluted smoke, that can cause diseases. The water from the river is also brings awful diseases, which causes the people – mainly children – diseases and infections, so the children dehydrates faster, which is very dangerous. The closest hospital is in Indiana, which takes 1 hour in boat to get to.
Information about SAN PEDRO DE MANATI:
The village San Pedro de Manati is also located in the district Indiana, the province of Maynas and the part of Peru called Loreto. Just like Pucallpa, you get there by boat.
The exchange students of last year built a school for the students of Secundaria (high school), and also a filtrationsystem of water. Since then, everything has changed about the village; the citizens have gotten way happier. The water has changed everything, and sicknesses happen more rarely. Before, about 4-5 people were sick each week, and now it is 1 or less a month. Many of the houses have solar cells – and the village also has a payphone.
In October, 5 exchange students travelled to Pucallpa and San Pedro de Manati, to see what the people miss the most. Since the exchange students of last year have done so much for the city, the only thing they noticed, was the roof of the school. The roof of the school is very bad, and made of a material, that makes it awfully hot to be in school, when the temperatures peak. We want to give the school a new roof, in a material, that wont heat up the classrooms like saunas, as it can cause dehydration, and also the students wont be able to concentrate.
Information about the island AMANTANI, PUNO:
The island Amantani is located close to the city Puno, in the Lake Titicaca. Amantani has more than 3000 inhabitants, who all speak Quechua, one of Peru’s native languages. The inhabitants of Amantani works with agriculture and grazing/harvesting.
The condition of the people on Amantani is significantly better, than the people who live in the jungle. In September this year, we lives 2 days on the island, hos hostfamilies. Here we painted the local school, and in the morning we woke up early to help the families water their grass and harvest. It was a very special experience, but also very interesting to live like they do – although it was a huge eye-opener, as we realized how lucky we are, and how much we have, compared to others. The inhabitants of Amantani are very closed and asocial, but they receive tourists.
Our project: AGUAMOSLO JUNTOS // LET’S GIVE THEM WATER TOGETHER: PUCALLPA:
The biggest part of our project takes place in the village of Pucallpa. Here we are going to build water towers, that are going to filter the dirty water from the Amazon River. The water will be treated in chlorine and aluminium, and afterwards run to another tower, that will filter it. The next 25 years the village will be guaranteed 98% clean water. The last 5 years, the Rotary Club of Iquitos have supported our projects regarding clean water – they also support our projects this year, a big thank you to them.
Goals of the project:
– To reduce the parapsychological diseases, caused by the dirty water
– To fight the sicknesses that causes physical illnesses
– To fight malnutrition of the children
Who will the project benefit?
– The project will benefit the 67 families, that consists of adults, children, and the elderly – but also the next generation.
– We are aware, that our fundraising says "Fundraiser for Jonathan Cain" – Jonathan Cain is a father of one of the exchangestudents working on the project, and he has been so kind and helpful with managing the funds for our project. A big thank you to Jonathan!

Our project: THE ISLAND AMANTANI, PUNO:
On the island Amantani, we will help the inhabitants in becoming more open, and develop themselves socially – the inhabitants are, as written, very closed and isolated. Therefore we will make some activities with them, to open them socially.
Goals of the project:
– To help the inhabitants of the island developing socially

A message from the exchange students:
The project of the exchange students year 2017/2018, Rotary International, is to help the villages Pucallpa and San Pedro de Manati – Indiana – Loreto in the jungle, and the inhabitants of the island Amantani, Puno.
From October 12th to 15th 2017, 5 exchange students travelled to Pucallpa and Iquitos. It was a trip of work, because they had to visit multiple villages, to find out, what our project of this year will be. In the villages, they looked for the most critical conditions, where they found out, that the situations of water and schooling are critical.
We know that the project will be a huge help to those who need it, but for us exchange students it is also a possibility to make a difference for this country, Peru, by using our resources, possibilities and creativity, to create a better world. We have come to the conclusion, that the biggest problem in Pucallpa is the health, which is ruined by the dirty water. It is a HUGE problem. We have asked ourselves; how can a village live without clean water? We are almost in 2018! We have to do something. The youth is not the future, but the present. Water is a fundamentality, water is life. Water is not a luxury, but a building block in a healthy life, a healthy community. It is a basic human right. And that is why, we have decided to make this project, and give the community of Pucallpa filteret, clean water. It is the starting point, of an effective development of the community, and a more fair world.
We are collecting money, to accomplish our project. We do this in different ways – for example by organizing multicultural lunches, with food from each country – we also have a special night coming up – our Noche de Los Talentos (Talents night) on December 5th, where all of the exchange students contribute with what they’ve got – we present both dancing, singing, poetry, music and much more. In a part of our Talents Night, we will also present our project.
But we need help, so our project can be achieved, and become reality. We are looking for economical support, so we can help the communities, who live in extreme poverty. We are all working very hard, to reach our goal.
