Help Marena Kick Ass On the AT

Every so often in life we are called upon by a voice that nests within us. I suspect it burrows somewhere within our bones. I believe the sole purpose of this tiny voice is to keep our curiousity gene thriving. It "ahems" when we become too stagnant. It nudges when we feel low. It loudens when we listen.

My tiny voice had made itself known one morning last April as the toothfairy makes known her hidden quarters. A new aspriation was waiting for me to wake up.

I must hike the Appalachian Trail.

The Appalachian Trail is a monumental test of courage, self-reliance and resolve. For me, the A.T. is the culmination of a greater journey, that of becoming the woman I aspire to be.

I have been busy preparing. Physical preparation includes hiking often to ready my legs for the thousands of steep miles between Springer Mountain and Katahdin. I must prepare my mind for missing old friends and making new ones, for the unexpected set-backs, for the hundreds of lonesome nights and the hundreds of mornings that I will awake damp and sore but undefeated and choose to pack up and keep on.

I must prepare logistically. The A.T. occasionally crosses roads and, every week or so, passes through towns where I will be able to shop or pick up a package at the post office, but otherwise, the trails cut through vast tracts of wilderness. Hikers have only what is in their packs to eat and survive. With no income, I need enough money set aside to feed me during several months of hard hiking.

Then there’s gear. It will take the right lightweight equipment to stay alive and dry on the trail, month after month—not to mention replacing ripped shells and worn out boots. All while paying my way on the trail, I can’t neglect my bills back home—from truck payments to cat food. I’m working as hard as I can to save money before I start the trail in April. Frankly, I’m not sure I can pull it off entirely. That’s why I’m reaching out to my community to ask for support. Whether you contribute enough for a hot breakfast in town or a fresh pair or sneakers, your support will make this dream possible.
