Afterculture Presents: Trinity

Afterculture Theatre is pleased to announce its largest production yet, in collaboration with Lexington Art League: “Trinity” is a site-specific, audience-immersive theatrical experience that tells the story of Dr. Oppenheimer, his atomic bomb, and the three great women in his life. At 5:29AM on July 16th, 1945 the world’s first successful test detonation of an atomic bomb, codenamed “Trinity,” turned the New Mexican desert sand into glass. This fictionalized account of what happened next is set on the evening of July 16th, where the audience members are present as Oppenheimer’s “guests” at a jovial cocktail party in celebration of the successful Trinity test.
The immersive format in which Afterculture works is a new frontier of theatre that has enjoyed great success in larger cities around the world, but we see no reason it cannot happen in Kentucky as well. In contrast to traditional theatre, there is no “fourth wall” separating the audience from the set or performers. Once the performance begins, each individual audience member is free to explore and interact with the space according to their own whims and desires. Everything in the performance space is meant to be explored: desk drawers can be opened and rummaged through, beds can be slept in, personal diaries can be read. Audience members who arrive together may leave with entirely different experiences. We hope this encourages bold decision-making.
This production is made possible by the generous support of Lexington Art League and its patrons, however, we will need your support as well. Production costs such as compensation for our performers and crew have been accounted for, but in order to build the fully interactive, explorable, and finely detailed world we envision for our audiences we still require a little over $2000. This amount will cover the remainder of our expenses for set pieces, props, costumes, and interactive elements.
Performances will be held at the Loudoun House, home of Lexington Art League, from 8:00pm-10:00pm 9/14-16, and 9/21-23.
