Project Do Good

Recently our group of 10 interns had the amazing opportunity to travel to South Africa with Land O’Lakes, and were blown away. Stepping off the plane we were met with a beautiful country filled with vibrant people. As gorgeous as the mountains, animals, and people are, South Africa is dealing with large problems such as poverty (their GDP per capita is $14,000 compared to the US’s $57,000), low economic growth (less than 1% a year), and complex social issues.

While in South Africa our team was lucky enough to have the chance to spend the day volunteering for a local group home for sexually abused and neglected kids. We saw firsthand their run-down facilities, bare kitchens, and heard about their lack of adequate funding to support the children.

What: We decided to see if there was something we could do to help these kids, who quickly claimed our hearts. The money we raise will be distributed to the group home through a local nonprofit to fund the purchasing of books, needed building maintenance, food, toys, and other important things the orphanage asks for.

How: Villa, a wholly owned subsidiary of Land O’Lakes Inc, has graciously offered to match the funds we are able to raise up to $20,000. We are reaching out to local businesses, churches, communities, and people like you to help us get to our goal of $20,000.

Why: The most important part of our project is the kids. Our team realized there was a need of funding for Leliebloem group home. The kitchen we worked in was bare, the food was limited, and the orphanage is not able to work at full capacity due to the lack of funding. Please help us support the potential in these kids.

From the bottom of our hearts, thank you!

Here are the details about exactly the money will be donated and what it will be used for:

Donation Process:
All donations will go through GoFundMe. The funds will be directly donated to the Global FoodBanking Network (GFN) and we plan to recommend that GFN grants the funds to  FoodForward South Africa, the local nonprofit organization serving hungry people in South Africa. Our intention is that FoodForward SA can then oversee the donation of the money to the group home. We are using FoodForward SA because we are concerned if the money was donated directly to the group home there is a higher risk for the money not to be used for what we intend. Villa will be watching how much we have raised and will match our funds on Dec. 31, 2018.

Villa:
Villa is a wholly owned subsidiary of Land O’Lakes Inc. They are a productivity-enhancing crop input products and services company located in Cape Town, South Africa. Villa has graciously offered to match donations up to $20,000.

Uses of Donations:
The donations will be used at the Leliebloem House. We are still in the process of understanding their greatest needs, but the funds will be going towards books, building maintenance, needed school supplies, and toys. A small portion of the money will go to FoodForward SA to make up for the money they used to allow us to volunteer.

Intermediaries we are using:

GoFundMe
GoFundMe is a fundraising platform where anyone around the world can easily donate to any cause. We choose GoFundMe after much searching due to their security, strong customer support, and they have the lowest fees when compared to competitors.

The Global FoodBanking Network
The Global FoodBanking Network is a certified 501(c)(3) whose mission is to alleviate global hunger by developing food banks in communities where they are needed and by supporting food banks where they exist. GFN accelerates the impact of their network food banks by offering capacity-building programs, including grants, to drive enhanced efficiency, accelerated scalability, and significantly increase nutritious food distribution. The funds raised through this project will be donated to GFN with our recommendation that they be granted out to Food Forward SA.

FoodForward SA
FoodForward SA is a nonprofit located in Cape Town, South Africa. They will oversee the funds getting to the Leliebloem House. Making sure the donations are getting to the children is one of our largest priorities and FoodForward SA is how we are going to be certain it is happening. They are a trusted nonprofit that we have personal contacts and ties within.

Corruption Prevention Strategies:
The entire donation process will be overseen by three trustworthy entities. FoodForward SA, the Global FoodBanking Network, and Villa, as well as our team, will be recording the donation process and ensuring that the money is getting exactly where it is intended.

Taxes:
All donations are tax-deductible and GoFundMe provides a receipt for your donation.

Thank you again for your donation. You are incredible!
