Adopting from Haiti (Now China)

Donation protected
When I watch the news, or keep up with what’s going on both nationally & globally, it’s easy for me to feel completely helpless and overwhelmed. It’s easy for me to also feel like I’m not equipped or capable of doing anything to improve the world around me. While we may never be able to affect change in the macro, maybe we can in the micro. Change starts at home.

As many of you know, and as some of you may just now be learning, we have decided to adopt from Haiti. Adoption is something we discussed early on in our marriage, even as far back as the first year. It’s something we knew we’d eventually revisit. Several months ago, we decided to dive in. When we first started looking into what adoption would look like for our family, international adoption stood out to both of us specifically for several reasons. Many families who have trouble having children of their own often look to domestic adoption first. We feel we’ve been extremely blessed by already having a few of our own and didn’t want to stand in the way of any other family out there who might be looking into domestic adoption as a way to start their own clan. We didn’t want to be another hurdle someone else out there had to jump over.

We also wanted to look for a country that has a significant need. Haiti is a short 3 hour flight from where we live, the same distance away as Arizona or Vermont and closer than California. Yet despite that short distance over 1 million orphans live in a state of constant need.

The expense involved is substantial. In addition to every spare penny we can squeeze out of our own paychecks, we're doing several fundraisers and applying for a number of grants. This page serves as a catch all for a lot of you too far away to attend some of our funraisers but still might want to help out if you can.

In addition to the $40,000, the other challenge of adopting from Haiti is the timeframe. We started June of 2017. The timeline for the finalization of th adoption process might stretch out to as far out as 2020 or 2022. But as updates happen, you can find them here.

I've spent a large part of my life too proud to ask for help. It can be embarassing to hold your hand out. All of those feelings subside when the life of a potential child hangs in the balance. More than just a way to expand our family, we want to help out a child. 1 million orphans is an overwhelming number. Bringing 1 child home might not have an impact on the overall number, but I know it will impact the 1.  Thanks.
