Sponsor a Camper!

Women’s Opportunity & Resource Development (WORD) has been helping women and families for over 30 years with programs that empower women and strengthen their families so that they can live healthy, stable, and independent lives. WORD’s Summer Arts and Leadership Camp (SALC) is a free camp for kids ages 8 to 14 who are underprivileged and homeless, or at risk of homelessness, and are students right here in Missoula, MT. It’s hard to believe that in our community some families struggle to find and maintain stable housing, but each year, we get anywhere from 40 to 60 campers who are identified through the school district as homeless or in unstable housing.

We have seen first-hand the difference SALC makes in the lives of our participants. We don’t charge our families anything and we strive to offer programming that exceeds the levels offered at some of the most expensive camps. Kids in SALC experience so many things they wouldn’t otherwise have the opportunity to participate in during their summer vacations: whitewater rafting, hiking and overnight camping excursions, horse-back riding, and so much more. We also incorporate experiential learning experiences in art, science, and cultural activities, specifically local Native American cultures as many of our participants are tribal members.

Through grants and donations, partnerships and volunteers, we have offered transportation, breakfast and lunch, and a wide range of wonderful activities for six weeks each summer for 23 years! Unfortunately, we have experienced loss of funding through the school district and other sources, but despite this setback, camp will move forward for the summer of 2017. That said, we still need help from you. Please donate to support a student’s participation in camp this year. It costs $1000 per student and it’s so important to our families and campers who look forward to it each year. Our goal is to reach $30,000.

We’ll make every dollar count to create an experience our campers won’t forget. Every child should have the opportunity to go to camp like their peers. Please help make camp a reality for Missoula’s less fortunate kids!
