Get YELLOW to Edinburgh Fringe

Donation protected
This summer SquidInk Theatre will be taking our production of YELLOW up to the Edinburgh Fringe Festival!

Who are we?
SquidInkTheatre are a collective of theatre makers led by writer-director Conky Kampfner. We produce unashamedly modern renditions of classic texts, and we strive to devise work which never shies away from the issues of the real world. Since our creation, we have produced sold out shows in Oxford, however YELLOW is our (very exciting) premiere at the Edinburgh Fringe.

The SquidInk team is also made up of co-producers Maya Tysoe and Kitty Hatchley, set design by Nelly Hayes, and marketing by Olivia Campbell. Our Fringe production of YELLOW will be performed by Grainne Dromgoole, Christopher Page and Natasha McCabe.

What is YELLOW all about?
YELLOW is a bold new adaptation of the Victorian short story The Yellow Wallpaper by Charlotte Perkins Gilman. The lead, Charlotte, is suffering from postpartum depression. She finds an outlet when she starts writing her blog and connecting with others who have had similar experiences. But her husband seems increasingly uncomfortable with Charlotte's new project. When the wi-fi cuts out, Charlotte knows something isn't right. And then the walls start to close in.

Gilman's classic feminist tale is hurtled into the 21st century in a darkly humoured reimagining which asks us to consider whether anything has really changed in our attitudes towards female mental health.

Praise for our original production

‘a stunning modern adaptation... truly a feminist work, questioning whether anything has really changed in our approach to female mental health... Obviously, this “rest cure” which was common practice in the 19th century is no longer prescribed as treatment for postpartum depression, but the story’s critique of suppression of the female voice still rings true today' (Oxford Opening Night)

'sensitive and complex... truly heartbreaking' (Cherwell)

Why do we need your help?
Taking a show up to the Edinburgh Fringe is a pretty expensive endeavour, particularly for emerging production companies! Below is a rough breakdown of the sorts of costs we are expecting this year:

- Venue hire: £1100
- Edinburgh Fringe registration fee: £400
- Flyers and marketing materials: £300
- Props: £100
- Set and Costumes: £300
- Accommodation £500

Without the support of our friends and family, none of this would be possible. Anything you could spare would mean the world to us! And if you're not in a position to donate but would like to support us in some way please do tell your friends and family to help spread the word about our production.

More About the Team behind YELLOW

Maya Tysoe has worked in both direction and production roles. Last year, she produced an all-female adaptation of Shakespeare’s ROMEO AND JULIET (Keble O’Reilly, 2018). She worked as the Assistant Director on the original run of YELLOW (Michael Pilch Studio, 2017), alongside writer-director Conky Kampfner. She was Assistant Producer on Tom Basden’s dark, political comedy THE CROCODILE (Michael Pilch Studio, 2017). Maya also has experience in independent cinema. She was the Production Assistant on STREETDANCE FAMILY (2016) a 5-star documentary (Time Out Magazine) screened in cinemas across the south of England and has worked on the independent feature DIRTYMONEY (2013), a gritty thriller shot in and around the streets of London. She has also worked as a production assistant at DNA Films in London.

Kitty Hatchley has worked as a producer in theatre, film and radio during her time at university. Most recently she has produced HOW TO SAVE A ROCK (Makepace, 2018, The Curve Theatre, NSDF 2019) with Pigfoot Theatre which won the Sunday Times New Writing award and the Samuel French New Play award at the National Student Drama Festival 2019. Before that she worked as assistant producer for Squidink Theatre’s adaptation of ROMEO AND JULIET (Keble O’Reilly Theatre, 2018) which sold out it’s run. She has also worked as a producer for 7 short films whilst at Oxford and was the Station manager for the student Radio Station Oxide where she produced and hosted 2 shows. Kitty has worked as a runner for TV production company Bwark in London. Having spent last summer working for ZOO venues as their events manager Kitty is excited to be returning to the Fringe this summer with such an exciting project.

Conky Kampfner  is a director, writer and theatre-maker. She wrote and directed a sell-out version of YELLOW in 2017 (Michael Pilch Studios). Since then she has directed a production of ROMEO AND JULIET set in a women’s prison in collaboration with the Colombian charity Acción Interna and activists from Clean Break (O’Reilly Theatre, 2018). She is also the co-writer and dramaturg of HOW TO SAVE A ROCK, a show with a zero carbon footprint about hope in the face of climate change, which is being published later this summer by Samuel French and which won the Sunday Times Playwriting Award at NSDF 2019. She is excited to be redeveloping YELLOW for the Edinburgh Fringe.

Nelly Hayes is a set designer. She began by helping on the project ILLUMINATED, a minimalist dance show at the Keble O'Reilly Theatre in 2017. Her first design venture was for a modern adaptation of Ibsen’s HEDDA at the Oxford Playhouse in 2018. Since then she designed for the Thelma Holt/OUDS touring production of TWELFTH NIGHT which went to Oxford, London, Guildford as well as theatres in Tokyo and Kyoto. Her last design project was for Lucy Prebble’s ENRON at the Oxford Playhouse this year. She is very excited to be on board with the redevelopment of YELLOW at this years Fringe.

Olivia Campbell will be starting her final year studying law at Oxford University in October. She has over 5 years of experience working as a costume designer for student theatre, both at high school in Singapore and while at University. She previously worked with Squidink Theatre as the costume designer for their production of ROMEO AND JULIET (Keble O’Reilly, 2018). Most recently she worked as the costume designer for Practically Peter Productions’ A VIEW FROM THE BRIDGE (Michael Pilch Studio, 2019). She was also the costume designer and makeup artist for the absurdist comedy YOU ARE FROGS (Burton Taylor Studio, 2019) which originally premiered at the Edinburgh Fringe. She is excited to be attending the Edinburgh Fringe for the first time this summer.
