Addison Family Fire

Donation protected
The Addison family we all know and love has recently had a tragedy in their lives and needs our help. Please read the following statement from them. :

On Monday, October 17th at about 5:40 PM, there was a fire at the Addison residence, located in Cortlandt Manor. We all made it out of the house OK and without injury.

The fire started in and destroyed the kitchen. There is extensive structural damage to that part of the house, along with heavy smoke damage to the upper floor of the house, where all the living quarters are. The basement of the house, which is where the family room, the kids play space and the homes utilities are, suffered water damage and some smoke damage. All of our clothing suffered from smoke damage as well.

The Town of Cortlandt Building Department came that day, along with the Fire Department and declared the house uninhabitable. The utilities were turned off and will remain off until an architect comes in and draws up plans on what work needs to be done to make the house habitable again.

We literally ran out of the house with just the clothes on our back. We bought the girls a few pairs of clothes so that they could go back to school. They went back to school the next day. We also bought the girls a few toys so that they could feel like their life hasn't been disrupted too much.

We have been staying in a motel not too far from the house so that we can respond when the insurance company, town and the utilities need to get in. The motel doesn't have any kitchen facilities so we have been eating take out for the last few days. We are very actively looking for a rental property, with either 2 or 3 bedrooms somewhere nearby so that we can get some semblance of normalcy back to our girls lives. The contractor that responded has already told us that it will be at least 6 months before we will be able to move back in.

We are grateful to our neighbors, who literally ran to our house to help us out that day and took us in that first night. We are grateful to the First Responders that came that night who explained to us exactly what was going to happen and who helped us find things that night. We are grateful to our family and friends who have been asking what we need and more importantly how we are doing. We are grateful to the Lakeland School District who have helped us out with the girls getting back to school.

We ask that everyone make sure that they 1.) have smoke detectors inside every room in their house 2.) make sure that the smoke detectors work and 3.) have WORKING fire extinguishers in their house, especially in the kitchen and near the bedrooms. And please practice with your family how to get out your house alive and safe.
