Nursing Care
Don protégé
On Tuesday, 9th of January 2018, the day before his 15th birthday, Alex had a near drowning accident.
While attending an underwater hockey practice, Alex's team mates noticed him coming up from doing underwater exercises and sluggishly swimming to the side of the pool. One of his team mates swam to him, to ask if he was ok, only to catch him as he seemingly fainted and fell backwards. He caught Alex just before his head went under water again.
Calling out for help, Alex's other team mates rushed to help. As Alex started to go into, what appeared to be a seizure, they pulled him out of the water. Fearing he had water in his lungs they turned him on his side. Alex then started to vomit.
After the vomiting stopped they noticed that he was not breathing and did not have a pulse. They immediately started CPR to try and resuscitate him. With someone already phoning emergency services, they continued with CPR until the paramedics arrived on scene about 15-20 minutes later.
They also confirmed that Alex had cardiac respiratory failure and proceeded to defibrillate him. They managed to revive him at which point he was transported to emergency room at the nearest hospital.
In the ER they placed him in an induced coma to prevent further harm to Alex's brain. After stabilizing Alex he was transferred to the ICU ward where he stayed in a coma for 4 weeks while fighting several battles with bacterial infection and respiratory problems.
He was on a ventilator, which managed Alex's oxygen intake, for most of his stay in ICU. He also received antibiotics and several other medications to fight infection, fever and to protect his brain from further damage.
After several tests, EEG's and MRI Alex was diagnosed with
Anoxic Brain Injury.full story
In South Africa public health care is almost non existent and the family need help with long term nursing care for Alex and to adapt there house to help him as he is coming home. In addition they have incurred debts coping with crisis.
If we can raise around 20,000 pounds this will help them at this difficult time and hopefully Alex will get the therapy he needs to start living again.
Thanks in advance to everyone reading the story and please any donations really appreciated
