Backpacks/School Supplies/Healthy Snacks
I am writing to request your financial assistance for the purchase of backpacks/school supplies/nutritional snacks and basic hygiene items for school age children (K-12). While this is my 18th year donating backpacks and school supplies to children in need living within my community, this is the first year I have had to reach out to others and ask for assistance.
This year's goal for the 2014-2015 back to school outreach is 500 backpacks; slightly more than last year's 446 giveaways. Because the numbers have continued to escalate each year, three (3) years ago the number of donations exceeded what I could personally continue to fund; thus, the reason why I introduced an annual fundraiser “Bunco for Backpacks”. However, each year the numbers of children in need living in our community have continued to climb and this year the numbers are simply beyond what we can provide from a simple community fundraiser. My hope is that you are able to assist us in our plight and in return, we can use the fundraising monies to purchase what school supplies are needed.
How are the children selected that receive backpacks? By those who walk in the trenches each day with these children. The classroom teacher, who is knowledgeable of every child in her classroom and the student’s private home situation, the school resource officer (SRO’s), whose job is to know every homeless child within the school and the location of the local homeless campsites and the social worker, who knows every child’s case she manages. This year the goal is to also include as many of the 237 children attending Lacoochee Elementary as possible. Lacoochee student's hold a special place within many hearts within this community as 100% of the student population live below the poverty level and approximately 95% live in a single parent home. This year we are adding nutritional food snacks inside the backpacks; as many of the children receiving backpacks are often hungry.
Please enjoy some of the photo’s of previous years backpack assemblies with all of the volunteers. Aside from the required school supplies, each donated backpack also include the following items: Body soap, facial soap, shampoo, hair rinse, toothbrush, toothpaste, mouthwash, hair brush, comb (for the boys). All middle/high school girls receive: Gently used and/or a new purse, make up, feminine products; this year the goal is to provide all middle/high school boys with baseball hats. All high school boys/girls receive disposable razors and shaving cream; essentially, everything food stamps does not allow for purchase. The purpose for all of the added extra’s into the backpacks is simply for social acceptance. If a child who is living in the woods, or in a home without electricity or running water does not have access to personal hygiene or basic hygiene items; then that same child has little to no chance of social acceptance within their peer settings. If the provisions thwart off one act of bullying; than the mission has served its purpose.
In closing, we remain appreciative for any financial donation/backpack donations and/or school supplies you may be able to offer our group to help the silent voices living within our community. Also know, regardless of the amount of your financial contribution, your participation has made a difference in a child's life.

This is the only fundraising event hosted each year to purchase backpacks and school supplies for children in need. 100% of the evening's proceeds are given back to our children in the Community during back to school. This past year, (August 2014) 653 backpacks with all necessary school supplies and basic hygiene products were given to: Various schools (Elem, MS/HS), Pasco Sheriff's Office (School Resource Officers), Guardian ad Litem, Pace Program for Girls, RAP House, African American Club and Hernando County Sheriff's Office. This year's financial goal is to be able to reach out and help 1000 children with their back to school needs. This can only become possible with the support of our community members.
For more information about the history of the backpack giveaway program, please see marjorieshope.com. For event updates, there is a publically created event on FaceBook titled: 4th Annual Bunco for Backpacks.
Thank you to all who share our vision in helping the silent voices of our community; the children.

Due to the random act of kindness from others who I do not know, we are able to purchase additional school supplies today in preparation for Monday's filling of backpacks. Also, this past Thursday we were graced with 40 additional backpack donations. Because the requests for this year have surpassed 600, we are able to provide the supplies with the extra backpacks to children in need. Please know, that EACH of you who have donated financially and/or with supplies have been a tremendous difference in over 600 children's lives this year. I am honored and always appreciative.
