Accessible Gardens North of Boston

$99,025 goal

Rest.Stop.Ranch was founded by Mary E. MacDonald in 2010. The inspiration came from the devastating dementia-care journey and loss of Mary's mom, Margaret in 2008. Mary and her husband Karl R. Ackerman have turned their grief and loss into a more accessible garden experience for people living with long-term illnesses and their care-partners, needing respite and recreation. Their "MargFMac Front Garden Loop," a memorial garden, is unique in the North of Boston region, as it offers seven wheelchair-accessible horticultural gardens connected by a 0.1 mile compacted crushed stone trail. The seven gardens are the Cut Flower, Roses & Kitchen, Ornamental Tree & Shrub, Orchard Avenue, Raspberry Patch, Cedar Grove & Tunnel and Koi Pond. Social programs are offered in the garden during the growing season: A Memory Café, most Saturdays, 10am - 12pm, and a Sunday Stroll, once-a-month, 11am - 2pm.  Private tours are also available by appointment.

By the spring of 2022, they aim to offer three wheelchair-accessible gardens.  Project goals and estimated budgets include:

The MargFMac Front Garden Loop    $50,000.00
- grade adjustment (0.1 mile)
- low-maintenance hard-top (0.1 mile)

The Secret Garden     $25,000.00
- perimeter path (315 feet)

The Cottage Garden     $25,000.00
- perimeter path (335 feet)

Mary and Karl are the creators and care-takers of the gardens.  With backgrounds in corporate project management, they improve the gardens each year, managing each project based on guest-feedback and priorities, balanced with the funding and resources available.

This morning, the Topsfield Post Office called me to say there was an object so tall they couldn't fit it in the mail mobile... A deer fence! This 2018 will be our first year to install a deer fence which will help protect our plantings - especially the deer favorites - flowering spring azaleas, mountain laurel, peonies, oriental lilies, and so much more!
