Hello! My name is Cora Wilson. I am a 17 year old vocalist and performer from Springfield Missouri. This past December, I auditioned for a competitive musical summer camp; Acapella Academy in Los Angeles, California and have recently been accepted! I am one of the 70 students to be admitted out of thousands of auditions from all around the world (nearly 50 countries) - placing my audition in the top 5-10%.
For as long as I can remember, singing and performing has been a part of who I am. One of my family's favorite home movies is from a Christmas concert at a church when I was 3 years old. When it was time for our class to perform our song, they handed me the microphone so I could sing what was supposed to be a 15 second solo, but I just kept going... For the entire song! That mic was mine, and I wasn't about to give it back! Since then, I've taken every available opportunity to sing and perform. When I'm singing, I always feel at home, like it's where I belong. Drama productions, choir concerts, private voice lessons, and recitals, music contests, singing and dancing on the street, or simply in the family room along with my family; it doesn't matter, just give me the chance and I'll sing. When I was 12, I first heard Pentatonix sing "Daft Punk" on Youtube and it blew my mind. I knew immediately THAT was the kind of music I loved and wanted to perform.
Music like that is powerful. Emotional. It has the power to lift people, take them on a journey, or carry a message that sticks in your heart, and will be remembered for a lifetime. When I sing, I feel I am connecting with people in a more meaningful way than spoken words could ever allow.
Being admitted to Acapella Academy is such an incredible opportunity and privilege. I can hardly wait for the chance to improve, learn, and collaborate with other musicians who like me, are passionate about acapella music. I will gain valuable experience from some of the best singers in the world. I am beyond excited to attend! However, great opportunities like this rarely come without their expenses.
The total tuition of the 10 day camp this summer is $1,995 - not including airfare to and from Los Angeles and other additional costs. With a sister in college, current tuition and expenses, and soon my college tuition, I don't want to place any further financial strain on my family.
So I turn to you.
Ifyou would consider taking time to donate, it would be greatly appreciated. Whether you decide to donate one hundred dollars or five, I would be incredibly grateful to have help in paying this camp tuition. And if you are unable to donate, please feel free to spread the word and share this with your family and friends.
