Thank you for visiting this page, which was created by Gloria Slakoff Hernandez, Danielle Slakoff-McLaughlin, and Valerie Slakoff.

On Friday, September 18, 2015, our beloved dad—Stuart George Slakoff—passed away after a 6 year battle with colon cancer. He passed away in the home that he raised us in surrounded by his four girls and his two beloved puppies.

In October 2009, doctors informed our family that our dad had stage 4 colon cancer and a life expectancy of up to one year. This diagnosis was followed by 9 full rounds of chemotherapy and a grueling colon resection. After this, our dad made positive strides toward full remission. In July 2011, doctors discovered the cancer spread to his liver. He went through another 6 rounds of chemotherapy.

In November 2011, the doctors told us that his liver tumors were inoperable and that he “needed to put his affairs” in order since there was nothing more that could be done. During this time, our dad and mom used holistic medicine to try to treat cancer. Miraculously, the essential oil therapy caused the tumors to shrink, and a 50% liver resection was performed in April 2012.  After this surgery, our father spent 7 weeks in the ICU, battling complication after complication. After exiting the hospital, the doctors informed us that he was in remission once again.

In November 2014, we received the news that his cancer returned for a third time. Due to the previous liver resection, surgery was not an option this time. Our dad went through chemotherapy and radiation, but his body was no longer tolerating it well. He recently stopped treatment.

Thirteen days before our dad passed away—on Sept. 5—he traveled to Omaha, Nebraska to watch his middle daughter—Danielle—get married. His doctor told him in June that he would not make it to that day. Although Stuart was barely walking at this time, he was able to escort Danielle down the aisle via wheelchair and to share a very special father-daughter dance with Danielle to one of their favorite songs—“God Only Knows” by The Beach Boys.

Between the years 2009 to 2015, there were so many things that cancer could not do. Cancer did not stop our dad from making life-long memories with his family and friends. During this time, our dad watched Valerie graduate with her bachelor’s degree and Danielle and Gloria graduate with their master’s degrees. He was able to watch Gloria and Jonathan marry. He saw his beloved LA Kings win two Stanley Cups. He watched UCLA beat USC 3 times. He traveled to Texas, Arizona, and Nebraska to watch UCLA road games with his family and friends. He visited Valerie in Monterey several times, taking her to breakfast and enjoying the beach views. He traveled to his favorite place—Hawaii—three times with our mom.

Our dad sold the business he created 2 years ago and retired early to spend time with his family. We are sad that he did not have more time to enjoy his retirement. He vowed to spend his remaining days making lifelong memories, and we are so thankful for the memories we do have.  (We are also thankful for the miles and points that our dad accrued while traveling for business for 30 years. Those points and miles made these trips a reality.)

Gloria, Danielle, and Valerie are asking for money to help off-set the $25,000 funeral costs and to help our mom climb out of debt after 6 years of medical bills and cancer treatments. Our mom would never openly ask for help, but we want to do everything we can to help her during this difficult time. After 35 years of marriage (and 40 years of friendship), she is mourning the loss of the love of her life and our amazing dad. Their love is one that you only see described in the movies, and we feel lucky to have witnessed it. Thank you for your kindness and generosity. The Slakoff family is greatly appreciative.
