On Thursday, February 11th, the Rivera family (Edward, Ivon, Michael and Samantha) returned home to find their house on fire and their beloved pets trapped inside. It was devastating. No one expects to return from an evening of family time to discover everything they own going up in flames; Also Eddie suffered some minor injuries as he rushed into the house attempting to rescue their pets. He was unsuccessful. Sadly, the animals died.
Although firemen rushed to the scene around 10pm, they were unable to extinguish the fire until near midnight. The fire marshal has since determined that it was an electrical fire starting in the garage/basement. The house burned from the garage/basement up destroying everything. All they had left was the clothes on their backs.
The Rivera family is a hard-working family. Recently, Eddie retired, after working years as hard as he could in spite of physical health challenges. Ivon works full-time as a Pediatric Nurse (for 28 years now)
while homeschooling Samantha, now a Classical Conversations Challenge 1 student in PA (Michael is a homeschool graduate).
This horrible event could have happened to anyone.
Family and friends have been helping them with food and clothing, while they are staying at a local hotel. The process of dealing with the fire department, the insurance company, the damage/recovery company and all of the other details involved has been very overwhelming. They are plowing through so many details that they have not even begun to fully assess their needs.
Although they are not a family that is used to, or for that matter, even comfortable with being in need, we know they need our help and we want to help them. We can’t replace their dear pets, nor the treasures that held so many memories for them but we can help them start their home over again.
They are truly in need of:
• Food
• Clothing
• Towels & wash clothes
• Furniture
• Bed sheets, blankets & pillows
• Office supplies & equipment
• Kitchen supplies: pots, pans, dishes, flatware
Just think about all of the little things that you use daily without even thinking about it. For the Rivera family all of these things are gone.
