Lovingkindness Justice!

Tax deductible
Heaven knows, our criminal justice system is broken! The U.S. now incarcerates one out of every 100 adults and, among all of the states, Virginia is number one in sending our youth to the cops and the courts – feeding the school-to-prison pipeline. Help us change this!

Justice based on lovingkindness (benevolence/do no harm) is called “unitive justice .” It can guide us away from what happened in Ferguson, Baltimore and Charleston.

The Alliance for Unitive Justice (AUJ) uses unitive justice in its restorative Justice programs and AUJ trains people in unitive justice principles. Check out our website: a4uj.org. We’ve already made a difference.

Using unitive justice principles proved effective in our Armstrong High School restorative justice program.

Between 2011 and 2014, AUJ provided over 120 circles to more than 260 Armstrong students, staff and family members who were involved in conflicts. Over 80% of the circles ended in an agreement. Six students were trained in circle facilitation (4 are in the video).

Incidents of in-school and out-of-school suspensions at Armstrong continuously decreased, with in-school suspensions among the target population decreasing almost 90% between 2011 and 2013. A June 2013 evaluation of our Armstrong program reported: “The vast majority of students and 100% of staff and administrators interviewed had an overall positive view of the program and saw it as relevant and useful for addressing conflict at school.” See the full report on our website.

Since AUJ was founded in 2011 (then called Restorative Youth Services of Virginia), over 120 people have attended our trainings. Participants learn about justice that strengthens communities and addresses root causes. One participant said of our latest training: "The training was positive because I came into contact with many diverse, strong, and powerful individuals. Sylvia's wisdom and commitment was very inspiring."

We keep busy! In the fall, Sylvia is again teaching a class, Restorative Justice for Courts, Classes and Communities, at Virginia Union University, a historic black university in Richmond.

You can help us expand our services and support us in bringing unitive justice to more people in Richmond and beyond via the Internet, through these four initiatives:

1.       Your contribution will make it possible to take restorative justice to the Richmond Juvenile Detention Center and the Virginia Union University campus this fall! The funds will be used to train volunteers and to provide AUJ staff to supervise criminal justice students as they facilitate restorative circles for the residents in the detention center and in the university dorms. The cost of the training and supervision for a semester will be $16,000. This project is our most urgent need! Please help us with this ground-breaking project!

2.       Make it possible for AUJ to provide circle facilitation services to communities where resources are limited. $20,000 will permit us to provide 50 circles (staff and admin. are $400 per circle, a 3 stage process that usually takes place over several weeks). This initiative can be a start toward stemming Richmond’s cradle to prison pipeline.

3.       Help us expand our “train the trainer” program, so we have more qualified unitive justice trainers who can then train others. This is our “build it and they will come” initiative. We only need $15,000 to fund this program for 4 months.

4.       Be part of offering our training on the theory of unitive justice to anyone in the world who has access to the Internet. Help us create a FREE online webinar on unitive justice theory and how it differs from the punitive justice model used in criminal courts. With a lot of volunteer time included, we estimate that the equipment, software program, technical assistance and AUJ staff for this project will cost about $24,000. We will do this program after the first three projects have been funded.

Far too many kids and adults are swept into the criminal justice process when a better solution is possible. This is an opportunity to plant seeds that change how we do justice. By contributing to our $75,000 goal, you can make a difference!

Thanks for helping us!
