Classroom Hydroponic Farm

Donation protected
With the permission of Hubbard School District, I am attempting to raise the funds needed to allow Hubbard Schools to support its involvement in S.T.E.M. (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math) and to continue its effort to bring local produce into the school lunch program.   One facet of this effort is the purchase of an educational program created by The Lettuce People, a family owned, urban hydroponic farm in Youngstown, Ohio, owned by Tom and Katie Phibbs. Tom is a Hubbard High School graduate, class of 1998.

The classroom unit features 16 square feet of growing space and uses less than 300 watts of electricity, some of which can be generated with a pedal power bike generator add-on.  The curriculum focuses on key areas in Science, Technology, Engineering, Art, Math, and Health with written and video instructions, lesson plans, and hands-on classroom experiments to meaningfully engage students.  The unit will be housed at the Hubbard Middle School.

This program can have a lasting impact on students who will make the connection between how their food is grown and the importance of healthy eating habits that can last into adulthood.
