A Theatre Trip for Every Child 10k

The personal version...

On Saturday 8 September I'm going be be running a 10k to raise money for ARC's charitable giving scheme A Theatre Trip for Every Child. The scheme aims to give every 5 year old child in Stockton the opportunity to visit the theatre for free, for what could very well be their first ever theatre experience.

Why does that matter?

It sounds dead soft I know, but the arts change peoples lives, they enrich their day to day experiences and give them the opportunity and the confidence to try new things. I know because I've seen it, and I've experienced it.  Having worked in an amazing arts organisation for the last five years I can honestly say it's changed my life for the better in so many ways and I want to make sure as many other people as possible can benefit from that too.

I hate running (or at least I thought I did until very recently) but after been asked to run to raise money for this amazing cause I went for my first run in over a decade to start getting ready for the looming 10k, I did 2.4k and I was exhausted. I thought 'there's no way I'm gonna manage this', and honestly for a minute I thought I was going to quit before I'd started.

But then I remembered why I agreed to do it. Working at ARC for the last five years has given me the opportunity to see the amazing impact the arts make on people's lives every day, and every child regardless of their background should have the opportunity to get involved with the arts.

So I got back to it and gave it another go and it got a little easier, and I ran a little further, and I actually started to enjoy it.  I'm running every other day and the distance is creeping up and on  Saturday 8 September I'm going to run that 10k!

I'd love to raise a load of money to support this great initiative for my local community while I'm doing it too though, so if you can afford to sponsor my run please do, you'll put a smile on my face and the face of a local child too.

Go on - do it for the kids!

You can read a bit more about the campaign below (which I copied and pasted from ARC's website.

The official version...

A Theatre Trip for Every Child is ARC’s new charitable giving scheme. It gives everyone the opportunity to contribute towards a scheme to give every five year old child in Stockton the chance of a free trip to the theatre. For many children it will be their very first experience of theatre and you can make it happen by donating just £10, or multiples of £10 if you want to donate more than one ticket.

By supporting A Theatre Trip for Every Child, you will be introducing very young children to the fascinating world of live theatre. Your donation will help make a trip to the theatre one of a child’s earliest memories and perhaps even one of the most influential experiences of their young lives.

A Theatre Trip for Every Child is a two year pilot scheme running until March 2019 and it is being trialled by ARC in Stockton and by The Albany in London. With your help, we can make the idea of giving every child a free trip to the theatre really successful in Stockton first so it can then become a national project, benefitting children throughout the UK.

Thank you!
