Former Foster Youth Need Your Help

Donation protected
The ASID UCLA Extension Student Chapter is currently in the fundraising stage of our annual community service project. This year we are extremely honored to be working with A Sense of Home, an organization that helps furnish first ever homes for youth who “age-out” of foster care in a fight to prevent homelessness.

The statistics are daunting: Half of all young adults who age out of foster care end up homeless or incarcerated. There are currently 28,000 foster youth in Los Angeles County. Nearly 2,000 young adults aged 18-21 are enrolled in extended foster care in L.A.

Fortunately, organizations like A Sense of Home are doing their part to help by providing the furniture and household items as first homes these former foster youth. This year, ASID UCLA Extension’s mission is to fully furnish two of these A Sense of Home sponsored apartments.

ASID UCLA Extension Student Chapter: Who We Are

We are students enrolled in the UCLA Extension Interior Architecture certificate program, and Cal Poly Pomona/UCLA Extension Masters Students. We are also all members of the ASID (American Society of Interior Designers) Student Chapter, a multi-disciplinary professional organization for interior designers.

Through community outreach, we at ASID UCLA Extension strive to advance the interior design profession and demonstrate the power of design to positively impact people’s lives.

This year we are honored to be working with A Sense of Home. Applying our designing skills and expertise, we will help furnish these sponsored apartments to greatly improve the homy feel and quality of life for the underprivileged youths moving in.

Who Is A Sense Of Home?

A Sense of Home strives to prevent homelessness by creating first-ever homes for youth aging out of foster care with donated furniture and home goods. 30% of those struggling with homelessness are former foster youth. The homeless crisis can only end through prevention. In 2018, A Sense of Home served over 110 households, 209 individuals, 50% of which were children.

A Sense of Home believes:
“that homelessness can only be eradicated through the active participation by all community stakeholders when focusing on prevention. The largest sector falling into homelessness are virtually invisible to society. They are the young people who survived the foster care system only to exit the system having to fend for themselves.”

What We Need From You:

Through our collaboration with A Sense of Home, ASID UCLA Extension volunteers will put their design skills to create aesthetic and functional interiors for two underprivileged families.  Please help us raise the funds necessary to fully furnish two apartments.  Your contribution will help provide a fair chance for long term self-sufficiency for these former foster youth and prevent homelessness.

THANK YOU FOR HELPING ASID UCLA EXTENSION'S goal of contributing to A SENSE OF HOME’S cause in preventing homelessness.  We are GRATEFUL!
