A Road to the Commode

As our efforts continue, we look forward with excitement to our latest pursuit. While the conditions in Haiti are improving, some basic necessities continue to elude the children who attend École National de Cazeau, Tabarre, Haiti. 



While the love and joy of learning is palpable at École National de Cazeau, the school is lacking basic hygienic conveniences, namely…toilets. Currently, there are unsanitary ‘bathroom’ conditions consisting of a hole in the ground with no septic system to safely remove waste hygienically and germ-free.  Without proper sanitation facilities, waste from infected individuals can contaminate a community’s land and water, increasing the risk of infection for other individuals. Proper waste disposal can slow or even prevent the infection cycle of many disease-causing agents.



According to the United Nations’ Millennium Development Goals Report, one in five girls of primary-school age are not in school, compared to one in six boys. One factor accounting for this difference is the lack of sanitation facilities for girls reaching puberty. Girls are also more likely to be responsible for collecting water for their family, making it difficult for them to attend school during school hours. The installation of toilets and latrines may enable school children, especially menstruating girls, to further their education by remaining in the school system.



Our goal is to provide seven proper toilets for the children and teachers to use during school hours, and your generous donation is vital to our mission! Your support is crucial and we’re hoping to raise $10,000 dollars to purchase toilets, pay labor for installation and build a septic system.  Imagine the change in the school day for these children, when ‘going to the bathroom’ is a clean, easy, and sanitary venture. Let’s improve the conditions for these children, one potty at a time!
