A Place To Grow - Refugee Project

$10,000 goal

Campaign created 12 months ago
Redeer has an amazing idea to help the thousands of refugees fleeing from Syria into Northern Iraq. He knows the idea will work because he himself was a refugee and he still has family and friends living in the city to which the refugees are now fleeing. This is an inspiring story of giving back.

Redeer came to Australia in 2006 as a young refugee. He was lucky to leave the war behind him, however he found making a life in Australia very difficult. But thanks to the help of the Australian community he learned English, got himself a good job and built a great life for himself. He now has a wife and a 3 year old daughter and recently bought his first home in Melbourne's north.

Recently Redeer travelled back to Duhok in Northern Iraq, the city he left 10 years ago. His mother still lives there and it was great to see her again and let her meet her granddaughter for the very first time. However, Redeer couldn't help noticing that in his old home town there were thousands of people; men, women and children who were living on the streets, with little food and drinking water. He learned that they were displaced people escaping ISIS and the wars in Syria and Mosul. They had fled to Duhok with only what they could carry on their long journey to safety.

Redeer started meeting with these people to find out how he could help them stand on their own two feet, the way he was helped when he came to Australia. He found that many of the men were farmers, and they told him that if they had a greenhouse they would be able to grow enough food so their families could eat. The farmers could also make some money by selling their vegetables to the locals of Duhok. And this money could be used to buy other necessities and also to build more greenhouses.

Redeer met with the Kurdish government and gained assurances that if he could get the greenhouse built they would supply the water.

Redeer connected with good reputable greenhouse builders and got a good price of $10,000 for a 200 square metre greenhouse that can produce up to 9000kilograms of vegetables per year. For $15,000 they could build two greenhouses of the same size.

Here is a breakdown of the costs as per the quote:

Greenhouse $4800
Installation $1200
Water System $1160
Seedlings $170
Training Sessions for Refugees $1700
Administration Costs (Government Permits etc.) $900

And so, A Place to Grow Greenhouse Project was born. I was so inspired that I was keen to help in anyway I could.

My name is Gavin Ackerly. I started out as an electrician and later became a CEO of a community organisation in Australia, Community Four (communityfour.org). I grew up and still live in the outer eastern suburbs of Melbourne. I am Redeer's friend and have been since he came to Australia. I was his employment caseworker back in those early days. I have always been so inspired by how he has taken his toughest life experiences and turned them into beautiful, positive outcomes.

On this project, I have helped Redeer with the crowd funding video (my first ever!) I am also assisting him with the planning and management.

I'm proud to be working on this project with Redeer because I know he will make it a great success.

If we can raise the $10,000 needed. I will accept payment from GoFundMe. I will transfer this to Redeer's account who will then wire the money to his brother Shivan in Duhok, Iraq. Shivan will then engage the greenhouse contractors and ensure the project is delivered on time and as per the contractor's quote. We believe transferring the money through this trusted pathway is the best and safest way to ensure all the money goes where it is needed.

We have a letter from the Kurdish Government stating that they support the project. They have agreed to allocate the water needed to grow the crops and have also committed to supporting us in ensuring the project runs smoothly.

Take a moment to think about how amazing this idea is; a person who was a refugee from Iraq is helping today's refugees to become self sustaining. Imagine if we could expand this model - refugees helping other refugees to solve their problems at the source.  I believe the potential of A Place to Grow is enormous.

Redeer, I and the thousands of refugees who will benifit from this project would be so grateful for your help.
